Windows XP Updates

My computer at work keeps telling me that I need o update, and that I need to install 'Windows XP Service Pack 3'.

Does anyone know what this is, and will it be harmful to my computer if I install it?

Actually, the SysAdmin in my work advised against XP-sp3.
Cant remember of hand why but willl find out on Monday
