Anyone that had seen this said it was fairly gruesome, to be honest i didn't think it was that bad, i mean its not picnics and sunsets but i think we have seen as bad in most films in this genre.
In 1997, before the visit of the pope to Rio de Janeiro, Captain Nascimento from BOPE (Special Police Operation Battalion) is assigned to eliminate the risks of the drug dealers in a dangerous slum nearby where the pope intends to be lodged. The film received four Academy Award nominations in 2004: Best Cinematography (César Charlone), Best Directing (Meirelles), Best Editing (Daniel Rezende) and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) (Mantovani). Before that, in 2003 it had been chosen to be Brazil's runner for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but it was not nominated to be one of the five finalists.

Central Station is very good film, it's called "Center of Brazil" in Portuguese. It's about a middle-aged woman in Rio who tries to help an orphan find his relatives* in Northern Brazil. It's from late 1990s.
