Steven has played many games for Blackburn in the past (including this season) on the right. He was awful against Germany in 2006, but then he had a back injury. It would be a much more balanced midfield imo, if Reid was on the right, and Andy Reid in the middle, plus it would allow McGeady to play on his favoured left hand side.

Because no matter how good he plays for Ireland (he was fantastic in both games just gone), he'll always be John O'Sh*t for me.
He was dodgy in both games! He gave the goal away v Georgia. Far from fantastic!!

    ..............Given.............

    Finnan O'Shea Dunne Kilbane

    ........S. Reid..Carlsey......

    Keane.... A Reid....... Duff/McGeady

    ..............Doyle..............

Only joking. They'd still hammer San Marino, though.

Has to be the same team that Trap picked, only with Duff for Hunt. I've got the feeling that, in the event of injuries, the squad might be a little threadbare - our one injured player was badly missed in the last two games. I'd like to see Keith Treacy, Owen Garvan and maybe Darron Gibson progress in the next year or so, if only to stop us from relying on Hunt and Miller as back-up in midfield. We also badly need more cover in defence. Things look fine for now, but injuries, suspensions and loss of form will have a say in team selection, just as it did under Brian Kerr. We need more strength in depth all round.

If Duff is unavailable swap in Hunt for the first half, replaced at half time by Andy Reid, whose natural position is left wing, not central midfield!
If Ireland is unavailable swap in McGeady
If Carsley is unavailable swap in Whelan

Seen as 4-2-3-1 is the new black:

    ...................Given.......................... ..
    Finnan.....Dunne........O'Shea.....Kilbane.
    .............S.Reid.......Whelan...............
    McGeady.........Keane..............Duff
    .................Doyle........................

Andy Reid could be accommodated either as one of the centre midfield pairings or in Keane's roll. Murphy could play up top also.

This will be the starting team vs Cyprus if all are fit. It's his tried and trusted - he's already stated he'll start Duff if fit so that's Hunt dropped to the bench.

Surely Carsley would get the nod over Whelan. I read a piece on this here website where he said just that, but can't find it.

I've already posted a 4-2-3-1 above but it's not simply using the current Trappatoni team. Hunt is dropped. A. Reid is a sure thing to start and the only question is is McGeady is now providing as much as Duff in current form....oh and Carlsley is back in!

In reference to Ireland's strongest line up there's been a lot of talk about who should partner S. Reid i.e. A. Reid or Whelan. Which indicates a general consensus that S. Reid should, when fit, be one of the first names on the team sheet. However, with S. Reid's injury problems it's probable that he is going to be unavailable for some of the qualifiers. Would A. Reid and Whelan also be an effective paring or should someone else be called in? For example a A. Reid-Carsley CMF pairing like against Germany at home. IMO a CMF of Whelan-Carsley would be way too conserative/limited.

substitute Duff in for Andy Reid and you've hit the jackpot. Totally agree with Carsley instead of Whelan and your Stephen Ireland comment.
