    Fun with names

This site lets you check where in the world your surname is most popular.

    http://publicprofiler.org/worldnames/

Let's you zoom into a country and check out the popularity in different counties/regions. Waste a wee while in work sure, ye deserve a break.

Apparently there's over 20,000 Carroll's in Ireland. I've never met a non-related Irish Carroll though.

My name is pretty common in Ireland with a Frequency per million of 484.79, not so much elsewhere, I was surprised that Australia is just ahead of Britain in second with 35.98.

It's fairly obvious where the name comes from though, with a frequency of over 1000 in the South East of Ireland. (That stat was there when I did this a few days ago, but seems to have gone now).

    Who says we're all inbred's?

How does it work it out because it didn't pick up a name I tried?

Does it not recognise "O'..." names?

My O-less name is most common here at 1937.78, then Australia. Apparently, it has a low commonality in Argentina (11.92) and India.

I think there's still a few bugs in it. Hit search twice and that might sort it.

Ya I think that's a problem my great Granny was an O'Gorman and it just gives an error with the O' in front works fine as just Gorman.

For O' names leave out the apostrophe (no space either). Seemed to work for me.

Thats brill. It shows the highest concentration in the UK of my family name in the area where my uncles and cousins live but its not the same with the US. Doesnt show any where I know my family are! That said the places in Florida where there seems to be a high concentration are the areas my dad owns land/property. Do they not realise he is the same man??

My sons' surname is fairly rare. Only 98.4 in Ireland and 1.83 in Canada which is the 5th place they are mentioned out of 5 countries!

Nice one noby. My commonality shot up from 1937.78 to 8474.52 (33329.53 in the South-West).

I tried a name of a family I know in Australia but it doesn't show up that there's any of that name in Oz...so that's why I'm wondering how does it actually work?

You've just discovered that they're illegals and should report them to the relevant authorities

Seems to give plausible results anyway.

441.93 in Ireland, up to 3241.96 in the West.

My name, which in Irish means (of/from) sea-protector, is most common in the midlands
