Hands up I made an error although I still stand by main point ie McShane and the goalie were most at fault.

McShane and Henderson made mistakes, but it was still O'Shea's fault.
I agree. O'Shea also gave away the initial free kick if memory serves me correctly though I'm happy to stand corrected so he's even more to blame when that fact is added.

It was Koller btw not Carew.

that free kick was nearly on the half way line. the whole team had fallen asleep after the over-celebration of kilbanes goal over at the dug-out

thanks, it's been pointed out a few times.
My mistake, don't know what made me think of Carew.
I was at the game as well too, at the other end of the ground, which makes it worse

McShane's "fault" was not taking the ball off Koller or blocking the shot. Hardly what I'd call a fault. He did all he could 1 on 1 against the giant. There's a reason Trap rates McShane pretty highly. He has seen all his games for Ireland and I'm guessing very little of him for Sunderland. If you're going to fault McShane for goals like Koller's then he has no chance.

Dreadful miss by Robbie with the header.

Goal McShane's fault for getting too close to his man. Keeper might have narrowed the angle a bit more as well.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

We are so bad at missing chances. Duff looked class in those highlights.

On McShane I think he did well, he forced Koller out wide, the only thing he could have put his leg out in anticipation for the shot.

OwlsFan, by that logic should McShane have stood off Koller? Then he would have had a free run straight into the penalty area, and a definite goal.
Even with the difference in height and weight, McShane managed to force him out wide. He could make a tackle because it would have been a definite penalty, and a red card.

I found a great quote from the Guardian a while back.

"My colleagues are in hysterics as O’Shea seemingly stops and waves to his mum in the crowd"

    http://football.guardian.co.uk/minby...893428,00.html

I remember Alex McLeish analysing the goal and he put the blame on O'Shea too for letting them take a quick free kick.

Too players who would not have stood off Koller for that goal:

We just take it as a given that those 2 are extremely tactically intelligent so they can get away with whatever style of play the like. McShane runs around like Puyol and people call him a headless chicken. I've seen Puyol feck up loads of times but he's still class.

O'Shea was at fault but a better centrehalf would have dunne (he he) better than McShane, Koller was very old when that game was played and shouldn't have scored, even after O'Shea's error.

We know from club football McShane is no good. I think if it comes to a choice between to rather brainless footballers, I'd take O'Shea he's bigger and more mobile I'd reckon.

Have to agree with you.Risky and all as it is playing O'Shea beside Dunne I still think that our only option at present. There is no way McShane should be there until he proves to us he can do the job and I am not talking about the one or two good games he played for Ireland.

A combination of Douglas and O'Shea if its the one I remember. O'Shea turned his back didn't he.

Puyol's an overrated donkey. I remember a young Duff showed everyone how much of a donkey he is a few years ago. He hasn't improved much either he's just lucky he plays with some of the best attacking players in the world.

Dunne headed the ball sideways instead of forwards, apparently because their CF jumped into him - a foul could / should well have been given.

Douglas didn't track the runner (their left back I think?) and O'Shea was less than convincing trying to block the shot. Given could have done better too - if he'd been a bit closer to his line he'd have had more chance to react.

Stan directly caused the goal by grinning so stupidly on 90 mins.

Liam Miller must have been culpable too, though he wasn't even there.

George Hamilton may as well have kicked the ball past Given himself with his "famous away win" comments on 91 minutes.

    .
Most definitely these made the result inevitable.
