I think the list removes players if they switch allegiance. The figure of 100 (now 101 including Hourihane) potentially makes sense if they only count senior internationals - although Willo Flood and as of yet Aaron Connolly have not been capped either.

A couple of things struck me.

    1. The outpouring of joy, reminiscent of Keane’s double for Coventry in 99, really highlighted the lack of exciting talent we have had in recent years

    2. This is a great thing for the youngsters hoping to follow Connolly in his footsteps, particularly Parrott: as well as showing them a pathway exists, it will also serve to share the burden of expectation and dilute the pressure on these youngsters. Connolly seems the type of guy who will handle this well, as he certainly has taken the initial (and biggest) hit

Shane Keegan was on Off The Ball yesterday. He said from his dealings with Connolly that he strikes him as a confident lad. He said his attitude has been "yeah, I'm going to be a PL footballer and, yeah, I'm going to be an Ireland international."

He also referenced Connolly's lack of involvement at 19s level for a period and that someone in the FAI referred to him as being "hard to handle." Hopefully he has grown out of that.

In fairness, Robbie Brady was also banished from u19 level due to “attitude” in the squad that got to the semi final against Spain that included Doherty, Egan, Hendrick, Williams, McDermott, McCarey and Samir Carruthers who was such a promising young player as a teen at Villa. Sean Murray and Anthony Forde are other lads who didn’t ever really live up to their potential. That class of 92 was decent. Duffy I think would also have been eligible along with Brady.

That someone in the FAI was correct. Connolly is hard to handle - just ask Toby Alderweireld and Paulo Gazzaniga

Didn't Connolly tweet something slightly cryptic when Obafemi was called up under O'Neill, which could have been read as 'How the hell is he getting called up before me?'. Obafemi would have played first team football at that stage though so wouldn't seem so difficult to understand. Am I remembering this all wrong?

That's bang on. His tweet was "what am I seeing here" And it was related to Obafemi

I suppose you have to rate ( hopefully with justification ) your own ability to get the best out of that ability .

Low in confidence Strikers won’t be banging in load of goals .

There was a bit of questioning of Obafemi's commitment at underage level. I would assume that insight into that potential wavering commitment informed Connolly's tweet. It was very ambiguous though.

The young lad looks a player. The second was a lovely goal and his movement was first rate for a lad having his first competitive start. Rashford for Man United hasn’t got a clue when it comes to making attacking runs!!

Fingers crossed he keeps getting game time.

Think the questioning was media generated obafemi played underage when picked and didn't switch between us and England or take a leave of absence from Irish duty. In fact he was left out of the under 17s euros and yet had his first appearance for Southampton in the league less than 6 months later so he could have sulked but he didnt

Starts again today for Brighton. Away to Villa. Hopefully he gets some better service than he got during the week.

    Duffy is on the bench.

Connolly had two quality chances and failed to convert. The first was a quick rebound that came to him from close range, but he scuffed it. He was under a lot of pressure so it was a bit difficult. The second was a breakaway where he made a great run behind the defence but shot it right at the ‘keeper. The colour commentator suggested that had he scored, it would have been called offside with a VAR check. No goals today but he looked lively and he was withdrawn for tactical reasons after Brighton went down a man.

Kidding or not, there may have been two fine goals for him against Spurs, but he's had his fair share of misses too. He needs to change that trend or he will be dropped.

Wouldn’t worry about his misses. He’s a natural goal scorer. Once he gains more experience in premier league, he will become more clinical. Could have been more composed for his second opportunity yesterday, which will come in time. His movement and runs are top top class, and the very fact that he’s getting these chances is a hugely positive sign. He will score a number of goals this season

He won't cos they don't have many options really. But yes he needs to start converting, hope he is not one of these 1 in 3 or 4 chances kinda guy and is just finding his feet. Time will tell. I think if he gets 5 before January he will be doing very well.
