It's time for Jack Byrne to walk alright. Walk away from Wigan and off to some club in Holland or with ambitions to play in the Premier League

I'm sure clubs will be queuing up to sign a player who started two games in the Championship this year.

I'm equally sure all those Championship sides gearing up for a right tilt at getting into the Premiership who he turned down to join Wigan will be circling again too.

I'll be interested to see how good Byrne really is.

He showed some glimpses in Holland from the clips I saw but on the flip side they finished the season well adrift at bottom of league so expectations were low.

I've given up trying to judge player who look good at club u19 u21 reserve team football as The standard and competivrness seems poor.

Paul Cook has taken over at Wigan. He's done well by Irish players wherever he's been.

Big game with Liverpool on Saturday - ended 1-1. Should have been the big start for our Jack, one would think?
But he didn't even kick a ball despite a plethora of substitutions by Wigan at half time.
What on earth is going on?

"What on earth is going on" im sorry to say it, but he is not god enough. If you compare him to Liam Kelly a guy around the same age. Jack won't ever play a competitive international game. Liam will probably play dozens.

I don't think anybody is expecting him to be God, but it'd be nice if he could make a League One squad.

And tell me this, were you saying 12 months ago that Liam Kelly was good enough? Even when many reckoned he hadn't much of a future at Reading until Stam saw something he liked?

Of course he has the potential to be good enough. He seriously needs to stop the rot in his career now.

He's not good enough? How do you figure that when he was among the top three young players in Holland a little over a year ago? I'm sure you've seen the clips of his fine play against Ajax and Feyenoord? It would appear that he's not suited to the 'basic' football of League One, and that's fine by me because he has proven himself at a higher level already.

When Liam Kelly was playing at bath city in the 6th tier of English football byrne was playing most weeks in the top tier of Dutch football so that's a bit of an in FFS air statement. It's only preseason give the dad a chance

I get a little concerned when I hear that players have a falling out with a manager (or club), as Byrne seems to have had with Owen Coyle - as with any job, it doesn't look good for future opportunities - for example Owen Garvan saying that he would outlast Ian Holloway at Palace - while that technically turned out to be accurate, Garvan's career has gone backwards since then, when he really should have been pushing on to the next level. And Emmanuel Osadebe recently put out a snarky twitter comment when he left Gillingham and has ended up a division lower at Cambridge.

Neither did Grigg, Morsey or Powell feature. Three players that are expected to have a big say in Wigan's season provided they can hold on to them. Paul Cook in a pre match interview said he had a lot of injuries so I'm assuming Byrne was one of them as some Wigan fans are hoping for a big season from him. Mouth watering game away to Southport tonight, I'll keep ye posted

What am I on about? Just providing an explanation to Mark as to why Byrne didn't feature against Liverpool. I don't think he's quite done yet but he needs to produce this season. He came to Wigan in January but didn't really feature as there were issues about his match fitness. He featured as a sub in a few games late in season and seemingly impressed a few. I'd be a bit concerned if he still isn't match fit with the season two weeks away but with three more pre-season friendlies before then let's give me a chance??

Not a regular visitor so not really familiar with the posters and their personality types etc. Will try and keep this in mind in future and I do like a bit of humour, you know the type that can cause a laugh or maybe forces a wee smile

Haha, sorry Siberian. The tendency to write off young players prematurely is subject to much satire here. I find some of the criticism above of Byrne's last year hilarious. It could end up making him a better player. He definitely has to make an impression this year or risk a Conor Clifford-type downward trajectory. But there's every chance he will.
