I think O'Shea, McClean, Westwood, Meyler, Dunne, Clark and McGeady would all have worked with O'Neill before. Stephen Ireland arrived at Villa as O'Neill was departing.

Did Andy Reid play under Keane at Sunderland?

Yeah, signing him in the Jan window pretty much kept Sunderland up in the first season after promotion.

I think they will get good results initially but it will go downhill
Same as the last three appointments then

    Clough and Taylor

And who says it's a double act? O'Neill will be the manager.

Clough had little success without Taylor.

This is going to end bad. I'm baffled. The only thing I can come up with is that O'Neill will have a clause in the contract allowing him to leave for a certain type of club, and having Roy as number 2 lessens the blow of O'Neill leaving, as there is already a manager ready to step up.

It'll be interesting to see who they get in as coach. Chris Hughton will be available soon.

Dan McDonnell was asked about the keane vs Fai vibes, and suggested that maybe the FAI decided to do what's right for Irish football. We can expect Kerr to receive a phonecall any day so.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

Well the press conference should be better than traps for starters, that's one good point.

Will be interested to how long the partnership last if things start/continue going pear shaped.

Dunno if McClean is gonna be happy with the decision tho.

I'm happy with the news and the FAI know it's box office.

People turning their noses at O'Neill? He nearly got the England job a few years back, he had a bad experience at Sunderland but kept them up. Look how many managers have struggled with that club since the American owner took charge (Keane included).

Success at Villa, Leicester & Celtic so a no brainer. If he wants Keane as AM then that's who he wants. Might do Keane the world of good, he respects MON & I'm sure the two of em can get us to the 2016 finals in France.

Tony Leen in the Examiner is saying that O'Neill sees this as a long term project and that he believes he can be in the seat 10 years from now.

Doesnt he know the Irish media?

He also plans to try and bring the likes of Ryan McLoughlin into the fold.

Ha, Christ! I can see any good will NI fans had reserved for O'Neill quickly evaporating.

I'm assuming this is the piece to which you're referring?: http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakin...al-612004.html

O'Neill will be the coach to the Republic's players. With Keane his assistant. Of course the dynamic between the pair will be informative but O'Neill may also draft in an additional coach to help out.

However that won't be John Robertson who has had some health issues.

Interestingly, I understand that O'Neills terms and conditions are every bit as lucrative as those afforded to his predecessor Giovanni Trapattoni and may even better them. But O Neill is more driven by legacy than money at this stage. He thinks he could spend the next decade as Irish manager.

He may travel to Dublin in next 24 hours to finalise contracts with the FAI, facilitating a formal announcement early next week.

The Keane connection is fascinating: he came as part of the O'Neill package and was not headhunted by the FAI. But together they are box office and initial reaction from the public indicates they'll spin the turnstiles in a way few others could for Ireland.

The meeting in London with FAI chief John Delaney was productive for O'Neill and convinced him this was a good fit.

It is presumed Mick McCarthy has been told at this stage that the position is no longer up for grabs.

He was the only realistic alternative once Guus Hiddink - who the FAI were prepared to splash extra cash for - let it be known he was not interested in the job.

C'mon, tricky; we're a dream team now. If your heedless impulses had been keeping up with this thread instead of off setting up one of your superfluous sister threads, you'd have noticed that AB made that joke two full days ago!

I thought this was a mad wind-up when I first heard. But I've come round to the idea in a 'it's just so crazy, it just might work' sort of way. It certainly isn't boring.
