4 year sentence for 0.003g of cannabis

Briton jailed for four years in Dubai after customs find cannabis weighing less than a grain of sugar under his shoe
    By BETH HALE

A father-of-three who was found with a microscopic speck of cannabis stuck to the bottom of one of his shoes has been sentenced to four years in a Dubai prison."
I always imagined the UAE to be a bit more liberal than the likes of Saudi Arabia but that's downright drachonian. Apparently another guy was put away for being in possession of three poppy seeds that fell off a roll in Heathrow.

I have no idea what you are writing about because you don't give any links or any indication other than your own indignation.

Do the readers have to sleuth this story to get the informnation 'cos you won't provide it? Its unclear, are you trying to make a comparison? which means do we have to go through all other drug importation laws in other countries.

Poor Student, you should know to link to articles you quote. I've linked it to the Daily Mail article that turned up for the first Google result. If that's where you found it, you might want to take your reading upmarket a little. The Star is probably a step up.

HarpoJoyce, if you have a problem with a post, report it. If you want to rant, do it elsewhere.

    You are right dahamsta.

I'd like to apologise to yourself and Poor Student (moderator), I hoped to expand the thread by asking questions. But now after rereading my post realise that the may be construed as accusative.

I have taken dahamsta's advice and reported the thread.

    Thanks
    Harpo

Fair trials international has a press release on this here. I don't know how credible or otherwise they are; I've never heard of them before.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read, under UAE law they can give you Four years if you have traces of Lemsip cold and flu in your urine

Lemsip doesn't have codeine in it, and I'm not urine, but yes, it sounds like a bad joke.

Jesus are you the apostrophe police. and I'm pretty sure Lemsip cold and Flu max strength does have Codine in it, if not then certainly some of the other products of that ilk do

I apologise for any confusion, I could have sworn I hyperlinked the bold headline to the article. It was obviously my intention hence I posted only a quote of the article as per the board's rules. I thought it was a worthwhile point to bring up. Dubai is an Aer Lingus destination and perceived by many as a type of liberal oasis in the middle east. If the stories are true it would make it a rather off putting destination seeming as you have little control of coming into contact with that miniscule a size of a prohibited substance.

If there was such a thing as the apostrophe police, there'd be a picture of you in their headquarters.

In a related matter, the ending a question with a question mark police and beginning a sentence with a capital letter police are looking for you, and a beginning your sentence with a conjunction lynch mob is rumoured to be forming outside your place of work.

No, it doesn't. Yes, they do.

What about the "grammatically incorrect conditional" police?

Or the putting a comma between two adjectives describing the same noun police? The PCBTADSNP will hunt you down!

    On topic,
The fact is,the amounts mentioned in the reports here (another mentions a man done for three poppy seeds which fell from a roll he ate in Heathrow) are consistent with utterly incidental contact. It looks like it's possible to get convicted for brushing past a hippy on the way off the plane. Don't these people understand this? Do they not care? Either possibility seems staggeringly stupid.

Better off staying away from these backwards countries anyway they bank on tourists so if it hits them in the pocket they will change

The UAE has enormous oil revenues and a booming manufacturing sector, and is one of the richest countries on Earth.

There's a big financial services industry there too.

I'm wondering if the article tells the whole story, it's not the greatest paper as Dahamsta already mentioned. If people are arrested over such microscopic quantities would there not be more of these types of incidents? As anto pointed out a large propotion of bank notes contain traces of cocaine.

The Middle is f**ked in more ways than one so nothing would surprise me. Then again if he dressed like the picture in the Mails article he probably arose suspicion

Try the link in my first post here. There seem to be many similar cases.
