I'd certainly have him on the bench ahead of Miller.

For Delap's throws to be effective (yesterday was a perfect example) you need someone at the near post who is a good header of the ball and who can help it on into the six yard box on even better, the team we have at present doesnt really have any notable headers of the ball. O'Shea, Kilbane or Dunne (i think our tallest players) wouldnt exactly be great target men.

Doyle can head the ball well. While not the tallest(not small either), he does have a good spring and a fair share of his goals come from the head. As for the players you mentioned. They are all good in the air and quite capable of helping a ball into the six yard box. Not that they need to help it into the 6 yard area as most of delaps throws get there without the help of a head.

Delap would be a useful player to bring off the bench (aerial bombardment with 15 minutes to go if chasing a game). I hope the Trap doesn't partner Miller with Whelan - Cyprus could give us the the run round if that is our central midfield pairing.

    Delap for Ireland!

Just watched stoke vs tottenham, and delap was awesome! i never realised what a fit and athletic player he is! he even reminded me of steven reid. he scored the winning goal for stoke and also hit the crossbar, and i think he'd be more than capable of playing the midfield holding role, also his throw ins could create goals for us. i hope trap was watching!

Always poor enough in an Ireland shirt but he never really got a fair shake of it. He's certainly in with a shout at centre mid, along with about 12 others. Those throw-in's of his are absolutely lethal as well.

Obviously Pulis rates him above Whelan and I've no doubt hes better than Gibson, hopefully he'll be in there against Poland

Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

He was also the top rated player for stoke on Sky Sports.

Giving him a chance would be a step backwards. He has never impressed in an Irish jersey and unfortunately its too late now for him. Gud game 2day tho

He has never played in position for Ireland either.

Delap put in a very accomplished performance from what I saw yesterday (60 minutes onwards) in a left midfield role. He always had to cut in on his right and frequently gave a clever reverse pass to an overlapping player on the outside. He attacked the 6 yard box well for his goal and hit the bar fom a rebound off the post when Stoke missed a penalty. He should have scored but it was by no means a Kevin Kilbane follow up!

If Trap is looking for an athletic presence in CM then Delap has it. No frills but I don't think Trap is looking for any. Worth a look at least. His versatility is useful in a squad perpective too. He can play across the midfield, has played both full back roles and in my opinion he has to look of a decent makeshift CB.

I'm not saying he should be in the squad but I certainly wouldn't rule him out on the basis of some performances for us a decade ago

Would agree wíth that view. At one stage he seemed to get injured every time he was named in the squad. He didn't get much of a chance after that and then better alternatives like Kinsella and Holland came along. He might suite Traps system and at least he is getting regular football unlike Whelan. He could be used as a stop gap when we wait for the younger fellas to develop.

The way I look at it is if we are looking for a defensively solid CMF we can choose 2 from Whelan, Garvan, Delap, Carsley, McCann, O'Toole, Gibson and even O'Shea or Miller. All these players have their limitations and no two are heads and shoulders abover the rest. It's just up to Trap to pick two he feels can play well together and that are on form. Apart from playing two of the U-21 guys or Miller I wouldn't have any complaints about who he chooses.
