So you'd play a wing back at centre half and a guy who's not a wing back at wing back?

I was suggesting that as Doherty gets older he may be able to play centre back to add a string to his bow. Doherty hasn’t really worked out for us as of yet. Coleman having lost a bit of his recovery pace may be better suited to being up the field in a more attacking position than at full back.

The whole Coleman / Doherty situation has not really worked out for us. Perhaps some imagination is needed.

I heard an interview with Doherty about a year or two ago, I think it was on the Second Captains podcast with Richie Sadlier. He claims that he's always been a centre back and will return to play centre back later in his career.

That may well be the case but it doesn't solve the wing back conundrum!

Not sure if it was the same interview or another but I heard him specifically state that his father fancied him to be a centre back in the long term. This may well have been in the context of him doing quite well there against Wales so probably not the same interview.

Probably off the back of his assist for Bale's goal against Wolfsberger.

Looking very much like Nuno Espirito Santo could end up the Spurs boss. I can't remember any negative fallout between him and Doherty from Doherty's Spurs move. They have a common agent. And Nuno's favoured formation suits Doherty to the ground.

Or perhaps Matt could offer to manage Spurs himself as nobody else seems to want to manage Spurs !

Came on in the 83rd minute in Spurs season-opening 1-0 win over Manchester City. Great to see him get some time on the pitch as I think many of us were questioning if he had a future at Spurs.

He was, and even got motm so a bit ominous for Doherty despite his good relationship with Nuno. Doherty did actually play well in his brief cameo too though.

One swallow doesn't make a summer. I think a match vs Man City isn't really representative of a typical EPL match. That lad spent the match at last ditch defending from Sterling. Most teams won't offer the same threat, and he'd be forced to play more positively. I wouldn't write off Doherty yet.

Doherty will get plenty of game time, it was a horses for courses thing for sure. Nuno is a rare coach in that he regularly subs his wingbacks in or out. Oftentimes they’ll only last 60 min before he brings in fresh legs. I think the idea is he really wants his wingbacks to do a lot of running.

In matches where Spurs are expected to be the team in possession, Doherty will definitely start IMO.
