Can anyone help with this picture?

What match is this from? I got the photo from an old programme but it didn't have the match details written there - if anyone with a good memory knows please do share

    Is it Turkey away in mid-to-late 1970s? 1976 / 1977 maybe?

The photograph looks as if it was edited to some extent.

It has to be from a game played sometime before that program
    What's the program date?

Depending on the extent of photo editing,
    it's not a home game.
    it's not Moscow.
The team we played then did not play in white shirts.
    Hairstyle early 70´s pre mullet.

I don't know off the top of my head which programme its from - I'll have a look tonight when I get home. There are very few pictures of us in kits like this which makes me believe it is from that period where the programmes were really scarce and are consequently really expensive now. Programme collectors would be better placed than me to say but it was the early to mid 1970s I think.

Just spent the last two hours going through all my old programmes trying to find it - turns out it is a magazine cutting from a collection of press/magazine cuttings I bought a while back so I have way of telling where it is from and what date. I did however find this O'Neills advert in the programme against Northern Ireland on Sept. 20th 1978 - it would appear to be from the same game ... I reckon it is either 1975 or 1976 and from an away match. If anyone knows for sure which match, I'd be very grateful

    Hey Emmet

Why don't you change the pic on your site of the Irish team giving the Nazi salute to the one where they didn't while playing Germany?

That photo of the Nazi salute has attracted quite a bit of attention (unsurprisingly) ... I might well take it down; I can't even remember where I got it from - I did all those photos a few years back going through many reference books and old match programmes ... if you email me a photo of them not doing it I'll replace it with that instead

That photo is historical, I say leave it. Most know the circumstances.
    The salute was forced.

Jimmy Dunne was captain of the team that (didn't salute) played Germany in 1939.

I did however find this O'Neills advert in the programme against Northern Ireland on Sept. 20th 1978 - it would appear to be from the same game ... I reckon it is either 1975 or 1976 and from an away match.
Terry is not in that team picture is he?

Every team photo pre-1945 all the players have this mad hunched up cross-armed stance as if it was freezing when the photo was taken. The nazi salute is hilarious.

Looks like Don Givens to me. No idea what game it is though.
Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

The first photo is of Don Givens - the file has Conroy's name because it was similar to a shirt I have which came from him. Photos from matches played around this time are really hard to come by!!

We played Spain in a friendly in Feb 1977 (I think). The cover of that programme has a team pic with an entire green strip. Have a look at the cover of that one Emmet and see if there is a possible link between your pic and the team pic. It could possibly be the same match.

I think it's great that you've put up all those pictures (I'm a history student, so I get a kick out of anything like that).

I really don't think you should take that picture down though. It's a snippet of the past, and in no way endorses the Nazi cause.

Might be wrong but I think you can narrow this down to one of 2 games:
    - away to France on 17th November 1976 (lost 0-2)
    - away to Bulgaria on 1st June 1977 (lost 1-2)

The team on both occasions was the same: Mick Kearns, Paddy Mulligan, Dave O'Leary, Mick Martin, Jimmy Holmes, Gerry Daly, Johnny Giles, Liam Brady, Steve Heighway, Don Givens, Frank Stapleton.

DeNiro mentioned possibly Turkey away in 1976. That game was played on 13th October (drew 3-3) but Dave O'Leary or Steve Heighway did not play in that game.

To narrow it further from Superhoops posts, I reckon it's France away 1976 as Ireland would have worn green shorts to avoid a clash with France's white shorts. I think Bulgaria used to (and maybe still) wear green shorts, which meant Ireland would have kept the white ones.

I believe it's from Paris 1976. The FAI forgot to bring an away kit (ie white one) and of course the French refused to change theirs. However both teams shorts were white and there was an arrangement that the French FA would comandeer a load of green shorts to prevent any colour clash. Trouble was that they were made by adidas.

Still beats the fiasco from the game in 1973 at the same venue. Legend has it that the FAI forgot the kit altogether and that the French provided an all green kit courtesy of, once again, Adidas. That was why we wore an adidas green kit with no badge for the occasion.

I'd seen the photo of the team wearing their Adidas tops and wondered why that was:

Does anyone know what the official line was at the time? Or did the FAI just say nothing and hoped noone would notice

I think at the time there was no official line. The most laughable example was Hungary and France at the 1978 World cup. They both turned up at Mar Del Plata (Purely guess of venue here as relying on memory) with white kits. France ended up playing in green and white stripes. Imagine if we had got to Argentina, with the FAI involved? I suppose the worst World Cup to qualify in those days was to Poland.

I can remember seeing that exact pic of Givens in the Indo in the 70's. Just can't remember which away match it was. I am sure it was a friendly and not a qualifier.
