david kelly had a good spell there back in the day. steve carr did OK as did duff. i support newcastle but i agree with the criticism - since the first keegan appointment they have been a yoyo club and i see nothing to suggest that will change.
nevertheless it's not a bad move. if he's playing regularly at a high level that's about as much as you can ask. he's not a top 6 club player so it's always going to be a second tier club he ends up at. newcastle, west ham, villa... i'm not sure the milan thing was ever really a goer but who knows.
I'm a Newcastle fan and was super excited for Duff moving! Unfortunately he came at a bad time for the club. The downturn after Robson was in full swing and even though we'd finished 7th right before under Glenn Roeder, it all went to pot then. Shearer was gone, Owen was crocked and the Mike Ashley era kicked in.
Duffer never gained any momentum due to a few injuries but I don't think it was a bad move for him, just unfortunate timing for both him and the club. His time ended on a sour note too, getting the OG that confirmed relegation then played the first game in the CHampionship and scored in a 1-1 draw with WBA before being sold to Fulham.
I think this is a good move for Hendrick. He'll get plenty game time and Bruce seems to really rate him. I know that Bruce won't be around for much longer in all probability but I think he'll do fine and he's a nice signing for the club too on a free. Who knows what the club will look like post Ashley too. He could find himself in a much better side in a year's time!
YDuff was amazing for Chelsea. Awful for Newcastle ( by his standards) and back amazing again for Fulham
Andy O’Brien. ??
Stephen Carr and Daryl Murphy had good spells too. Also Leon Best became one of only 3 Irish men to score a Premier League hat-trick, while he was at Newcastle Newcastle!
Stephen carr wasn't the same player he was at spurs. Tbf it was that injury. Not sure Murphy played a whole lot tbh
Gayle and Mitrovic got injured around Christmas that season and Murphy had a run of games where he got some crucial goals. He was a rotation option while in the Championship for the grueling schedule. He came in, did his job and moved on as planned after promotion.
Murphy was one of those key, unsung signings that get you promoted.
Wasn't Duff played at left back for Newcastle?? Scored an unfortunate OG to relegate them
Folding my way into the big money!!!
Awesome debut, got a cracking goal and got the assist on the other one. He was tidy and engaged throughout. Looked 2016 era Hendrick. Hopefully not a one off and he can be the player many of us wish he could be for us.
For the goal he set up with a smart header across goal, I think Fabianski didn’t do a great job. If Moyes is upset would be great to see Randolph get a chance to claim the position.
It would be a massive boost ahead of Slovakia if he could get back to his form from five years ago. Obviously can't read two much into one game, but at least there's a bit of hope for him for the first time in a while.
"Tidy and engaged throughout" is a great description. He did some good things in the first half but his confidence and quality really seemed to soar in the second. Outside of the intelligent assist and brilliant goal he was involved in most positive passages of play that Newcastle conjured up, with some nicely weighted passes. Outstanding debut.
He is a weirdo jeff. Sublime to the ridiculous. He has moments messi would be proud of. Eg his pull back for o'shea goal v Germany. Probably the best assist in a competitive ireland game....ever. then he goes a 3 or 4 matches doing very little
That was brilliant. His assist against Georgia is up there too.
If anyone can find a decent link for that polish goal. The weight of the pass is amazing
