North v South cup competitions

Have been reading up on the cross border cup competitions and from what I can gather there have been six different competitions in all, Have I missed any out?

Dublin & Belfast Inter-city cup 1941-1949
North-South cup 1961-1963
Blaxnit Cup 1967-1974
Texaco Cup 1973-1975
Tyler cup 1977-1981
Setanta cup 2005-present

The team with the most cup wins is Shamrock Rovers although I'm not sure if they've won 5 or 6 of these cups! Its says on the SRFC site that they won the Tyler cup in 1978 but on other sites I have seen it states that the Tyler cup was not held that year.

I take it they didn't attract much interest hence why most of them didn't last very long or was it more due to security and political concerns that they never suceeded

Was only about 13 when we played Linfield down here in the Tyler Cup Final Second Leg in 1980 but I remember all the flag burning in the ground, the local knacks pelting everyone with stones from the railway bridge on the way out from Mels plus the fighting and the near full scale riots through the centre of town that day.

Jesus that sounds mental like was there anybody seriously injured? was there only trouble when Linfield were playing? I suppose its just as well that the Tyler cup was cancelled when it was as I can't imagine what it would have been like if it had taken place with the Hunger Strikes as a background!

Think there was a few split heads nothing major plus a lot of damaged windows throughout the middle of town. The 70s and 80s were the peak for hooliganism and as far as I can remember every club had their "firm" but in the Tyler cup I can only remember Linfield as it was my first cousin who ran onto the pitch and set fire to the Union Jack but as for atmosphere it was electric.

Worst things I can remember in the LOI is coming back from a match in Waterford in a bus without windows and always remember Oriel Park as being the most hostile place imaginable with trouble it seemed every time we played there.

St Mels wasn't a safe haven either. The Athlone lads always had the advantage of the narrow laneway out from the gound and would always be up on the railway lobbing down stones at exiting away fans.

Sure many on here would have similar stories from those days as well

Rovers beat Finn Harps 1 - 0 in the final at Milltown. Steve Lynex scored the winner.

Well its good to see that we have seemingly moved away from this sort of nonsense! Even the Setanta cup has been pretty much hassle free IIRC.

Rovers beat Finn Harps 1 - 0 in the final at Milltown. Steve Lynex scored the winner.

Solitude, off topic, but just wondering why you had to play your inter toto home games in windsor park. I`ve never been to Solitude but from the tv you can see you have a brand new stand behind one goal (away fans ?) and a decent but old stand on the other side - whats the problem ?

Yes the new stand is the away stand it was built about 5 years ago! the main stand looks alrite from a distance but when you go into it it is pretty run down it was built in the 1950s AFAIK and is in need of a lick of paint, but It always has a good atmosphere!

But the problem was that we couldn't get a license because of our changing room facilities are poor and we didn't have adequate drug testing facilities. A new 1,600 seater stand with all the required facilities is supposed to be getting built behind the other Goal to replace the covered terracing known as the cage. Rumour has it that its going to look like Corks new stand. work was supposed to have started just after the end of the season but was down at Solitude last week and didn't look like anything was happening! hopefully it will be completed in time for the setanta cup!

I'm sure Shamrock Rovers have a few Leinster Senior leagues to their name aswell.

Was at the game myself although was a couple of years younger than you. Was also there the year before when you beat us 2-1 and if I recall that was pretty much trouble free.

Irish News cup? That doesn't ring a bell with me may be a bit before my time though, Chances are that there was an Irish News cup but that it was probably for GAA knowing the Irish News!

I have vague recollection of Dundalk being beating beaten by Limavady Utd and finding it quite amusing. Def not GAA. Dont know what the qualification criteria was though 95/96 could have been league champions.
