They have a decent first 11 and one or two good squad members. Buckley bottled the league last year when it was very winnable, and I think they will come up short again. He does have them playing a nice brand of football though. A shame that less than a 1,000 ( according to ET) turned out last night to see the league leaders play another decent footballing side.

How did Buckley bottle it last season? They played good football all year and, unlike Croly for the recent match against Bohs, didn't inexplicably abandon a season's worth of passing football to revert to ineffective hoofing.

He had a very good team who were useless in front of goal. This season, he seems to have resolved that, at least enough to win rather than draw tight games.

Bit harsh on Sligo to suggest Pats bottled the league last year. Best team won, no doubt about that.

Best team always wins the league

Pats lost two of their last three games in 2012, against Derry and Sligo. Winning those two games would have won them the league, and deservedly so. ( Yes I had a few bob on Pats and it still annoys me!)
I hope that Pats do it this year but I have serious doubts they can do it under Buckley.

How dare you guys pollute this attendance thread with a football discussion?

Anyway it must be obvious that Shamrock Rovers are the only credible title challengers - St Pats, Sligo, Derry and whoever the hell is in 4th place will all fade away.

We lost the Derry game after Sligo had already won the title, we pretty much gave up after we lost (were robbed) in the Showgrounds.
    Here on a technicality.

I'd have fancied Sligo to close out the league even if Pat's had got a result at the Showgrounds. The Rovers game was practically just Sligo running around and waiting for the final whistle.

Ifs and buts lads. As Dodge said we were the best team over the course of the season.
This year will be another matter entirely.

We lost our last two games.

Pats never really looked liked winning the league last season. Maybe if Anto Floods shot that clipped the top of the bar had been a few feet lower in our title winning game they might have had a chance

the same 958 who Dodge claims went to Dalymount last week showed up in Richmond on Monday night... just messin!
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

They really are woeful crowds, so much for the magic of the cup!

There is a certain irony in the LOI having followed the UK in gradually thinking less and less of cup competitions despite all our protestations about people blindly following UK teams.

It's a real pity I think. When I started following Harps the cup was a big deal and you'd see a bigger crowd for a cup game against a team in your division than for a league game. Now it's always smaller unless very late in a cup competition. Boo-urns.

I agree totally re: the magic of the cup being lost. There was time when it didn't matter who you were playing, it was a big deal.

Irish people have been brainwashed by the British media into thinking the cup is a micky mouse tournament. The ironic thing is that in England it's because the big teams want to win the Champions League. We don't have to worry about an Irish team winning a European competition probably ever, so the situation is totally different.

I still love the cup. Pathetic attendances though. How many Irish people who travelled over the water to Wembley during the week will attend games this weekend? They're (mostly) a disgrace - I'm heartily fed up of 'The Green Army', or whatever they're called these days.

Same here I love the cup, I just think since it's been moved to the aviva and with it been on RTE and getting a rare bit of coverage the final is a fantastic spectacle and really ends the season in style.

Yeah- I think the Aviva finals are a great move, especially with the cheap tickets.

The final last year was my first one and I'll certainly be making it my business to attend every one from here on despite who's playing.

Yep attended all three in the Aviva. All three had better atmospheres than the FAI internationals.
