I don't know why exactly, but it makes me think of Jermaine Beckford. Remember him? Had a few decent seasons with Leeds in tier two, scored a winner again Man Utd at Old Trafford in a cup game. I remember everyone talking like he was a superstar in the making, why isn't a big club signing him, why isn't he getting called up to the England squad, etc. Fast forward past an underwhelming run with Everton, Leicester, Preston (where he was sent off for fighting with a team mate on the pitch, then sent off three minutes after returning from suspension) currently playing with Bury in Tier 3 and played six games with Jamaica in 2013.
The point being, a lower tier player scoring against a top club in a cup game is absolutely meaningless as a metric for overall talent.
Well at least he got a chance, he didn't seem to do bad, various factor apply, different systems etc... not every player makes
it. I think maybe Beckford relied more on physical attributes rather than say positioning and awareness, the more mental aspects of the game. Plus as you point out he seems to have some attitude problems.
Just give him a shot though, if he turn out to be rubbish he won't be any different to what we already have!
He's got a pretty strong scoring record, albeit at a lower level. It strikes me as strange that a League 1 or Championship team has never taken a punt on him. I suppose there's no harm in having a look at him in a training squad but at age 29 I suspect there are other players in need of more match time with our senior squad like Horgan, Hogan, Maguire that we really need to start blooding -- young players plying their trade at a higher level who will offer more for Euro 2020 qualifying and the tournament itself in the attacking positions.
One of the reasons no big club came in for him is that Amond is almost nuts.
Actually his scoring record in four seasons at League Two level was about one in four-and-a-half games before he had that big year at Grimsby in the National League and followed that up with a record of about one in three games over the last season and a half with Hartlepool and Newport - best bet for a move up would probably be promotion with Newport, or a transfer to another promoted team.
Yes but he often plays in the wide positions, no? Good strike record for a player who isn’t exclusively a centre forward. But perhaps I have bad intel on that front.
It's the wrong thread Jeff!
Winner for Newport against Leicester City in the FA Cup today.
Call him up Mick!

He was interviewed by the Telegraph pre-match and spoke very well about the thrill of the Spurs goal and the trials and tribulations of playing at that league level. There's another good interview to be had now after the penalty.
Heard in a interview that he played hurling for Carlow under an assumed name before a Rovers game :O
With the finish of a continental deity tonight as his club knocked Middlesbrough out to make the business end of the FA Cup and meet Man City

First goal 2:00 we don't see the assist, but it hardly created the goal.
Hell of a strike. Ball coming to him at pace.
Amond is playing like he's a Brazilian :)
Better than playing like he's a Cashew.
