Wexford FC v Athlone Town
Cracking game in Athlone tonight but probably decided as early as the 10th minute when Danny Furlong got a straight red for a touch of retaliation on the Athlone centre-half. Wexford were ahead at that point through a slot home by the lively Emmet Nugent down the right wing, but Athlone equalised just after the dismissal with the excellent Kaleem Simon scoring a similar goal to Nugent's. 1-1 at half-time with Wexford surviving a few scares. Athlone went ahead early in the second half through Williams, but Wexford equalised immediately when Nika Arevadze found Danny Doyle in the Athlone box who was fouled. Jack Doherty goaled from the spot although Myles in the Athlone goal got a strong arm to it. Cards then started to fly for both sides and Athlone, who looked strong in the air, got a third when a nice bicycle kick by Simon close in after Athlone had won the first header from a corner put the home side ahead. As Wexford couldn't recover from being the man down as the game entered the final minutes, Athlone got their fourth when an error in the Wexford defence let one of the Athlone's lively attackers to finish for 4-2 final score. Good effort on the night by Wexford with Walshe in the Wexford goal, Callan, Cahill, Arevadze and Nugent impressing. Crowd was called as 346.
