Jason Knight named on the bench for Derby tonight
Printable View
Jason Knight was on the bench for the Derby team tonight against Leeds. He took his place alongside English internationals Ashley Cole, Scott Carson and Tom Huddlestone. Great news and great reflection on the lad for such an important game under such a good midfielder of a manager.
You have to wonder though would promotion for Deby be a good thing for him as they would buy 5 or 6 players and he would drop down the pecking order but then again if he's good enough...
On the bench again today for the play off final.
That would be one hell of a game to make your debut in!
Nice to see knight make the subs tonight for derby. Dowell who will be 22 in a few months plays eligible for us and out of age for England 21s wonder of we will see him involved with us
Knight on is this his debut?
Yep, first appearance at only 18 - he's not 19 until February
Gets a start against WBA today. Great to see.
Brilliant. Great news. Only 18 and a half and is clearly highly rated by two iconic central midfield players of the last 10 years- Cocu and Lampard. He's in a great environment there. Playing at the base with an experienced Tom Huddlestone. Any reports on the match so far?
Started CM alongside Keogh which is a bit odd
From The Athletic
Quote:
Phillip Cocu’s eyes light up when he’s quizzed about Jason Knight’s first league start for Derby County. “What’s not to like about him? He’s just an 18-year-old boy breathing football.”
His manager’s enthusiasm matched the dynamism the player showed for 90 minutes against West Bromwich Albion. A promising first league start teamed with his manager’s enthusiasm has potentially set the wheels in motion for another Rams academy graduate to make waves with the senior squad.
Knight found out he was starting 90 minutes before kick-off, not from Cocu but instead when he scanned the team sheet on the wall. His parents had no idea he was playing, having only just returned from a holiday, and the teenager didn’t text them to let them know, choosing to focus on preparing himself for the match instead.
Who wrote this? Behind a paywall for me.
David Sneyd was on OTB AM and said many things similar to what has been reported above. The praise from Cocu was the most heartening.
They played an interview with Knight also. Didn't realise his brother was in Leicester's academy and is with Cabinteely now.
Starts tonight vs Sheff Wed. Big chance for him. Cocu under pressure with derby currently 16th in championship. Would be nice if they improve with Knight starting regularly
Booked and substituted before Derby equalised with a late penalty, won by his replacement Jack Marriott.
The Derby Telegraph described his performance as 'tenacious and got about the pitch', and nobody actually rated higher than his 6 - https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/spo...nesday-3634248
Back to back starts for Jason today. He will be up against his Irish u21 captain Jayson Molumby. Great to see!
Another start today, Derby really need to start getting results so Knight can maintain his place

Subject of high praise indeed from the great Wayne Rooney.
Hopefully Charlie D has noted Cocu’s quote:
“His running stats are unbelievable. What he covers in a game you rarely see, especially at this age. A typical box-to-box player. You can play him on the left wing, on the right wing. As a defensive midfielder, he does the job. He's reliable.“
May have taken the place of Conor Coventrys in the under 21s now.

Nice video of him posted today showing an overview of his career to date with some interviews.
Let’s just hope he continues to start and plays well in the coming months
Cocu obviously a big fan but you would be concerned how long he will last in that job on current form, any change of manager could knock Knight right back.
Scored Derby’s opener, for first senior goal. Bundled the goal over line going in bravely with head apparently. Derby down to 10 men so under pressure to hold on, 30 minutes gone
Break out game for Jason. Has scored his second, 2-1 up into injury time. Fantastic
Game over. Hats off Jason Knight. This is huge.
Brilliant performance by Knight, apart from almost bagging a hat-trick, was really good on the ball, kept it well and used it smartly. He’s quick and brave and has an incredible engine by the looks of him, ran all night. Wow!
Only 18.

4:05.
They gave him acres of space!, shocking defending!!
Twice nightly Knighty?
Looked pretty shocking to me!!
Look where he is at 2:07
It is like he is wearing a cloak of invisibility!!
Still give him credit for finding that space in the first place.

He’s starting tonight against Barnsley lads, we’ll worth a look if you’ve Sky Sports, very good little player, both on and off the ball,McCarthy should really be keeping a close eye on him by now.
His two goals against Charlton on Monday, aged 18 years and 320 days made him the youngest Ireland player to score a brace in English league football since former U19 forward Harry Crawford scored twice for Southend in League Two in March 2011 aged 18 years and 142 days
Watched his game today. He doesn’t look the biggest but he looks strong physically. Shoulder barged a larger Barnsley player who needed legitimate treatment near the corner flag.
He’s also quick, good technically and works hard — makes good little passes and doesn’t seem to give the ball away.
Definitely one to watch.
Another goal to equalize . Appears to have been a good one, long range tight angle bottom corner. Good stuff.
Edit: actually appears to have been the proverbial “cross come shot “
New long term contract until 2023. Well deserved https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2020...-derby-county/
Watched Knight today vs Fulham. Wasn’t great, seems a bit lost out wide right. Clearly centre is his better position as we already knew. Just a shame Max Bird appears to have superseded him in that role for now. Have seen Knight play a few times now, never been overly impressed. But he is honest with a great attitude. At least 12 months away from commanding a senior call up. Let’s see how he does with the 21s as Molumby makes space for him in the middle
