don´t know what you mean about Kevin Gallen he wanted to play for Ireland at the time but was put under pressure by QPR manger Trevor Francis that he would lose his place if he declared for us, the chap never recovered from that decision.
Long is not ready for Ireland ( he reminds me of Micheal Reddy) Let him develop first, though I am worried with Given as manager, if playing for the under 21s will ruin him. Jesus we have the worst setup in Europe Givens under 21 and Stan and Robson with the national team. Begining to wonder if Robsons senility is contagious. Seems that way when Stan doesn´t even know which of his players have played against each other
hunt and long hit their penos in the shootout but doyle missed his, reading won 4-2
Trevor Francis left QPR in 1990, long before Kevin Gallen signed as a professional there in 1992, when he was 17. The manager then was Gerry Francis.
The issue about declaring for Ireland or England was nothing to do with losing his place at QPR. He was offered a better contract if he declared for England as his transfer value would increase because of the 'three foreigner' rule that was in place at the time. By declaring for Ireland, he would be limited by the number of foreigners at a club, but by declaring for England there were more options available and was more 'saleable' by QPR, hence the better contract. He played for England Schoolboys before signing professional. After signing pro at QPR he played for England at U-18 (won a Eurpean championship?) and U-21.
He made his QPR debut at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season in 1994/95, just a few months before Gerry Francis left QPR and was replaced by Ray Wilkins. There was talk at the time of Man.Utd. being interested in signing him.
Kevin's brothers Joe and Stephen both player underage football for Ireland but Kevin chose England for financial reasons. It backfired badly on him when he was badly injured at QPR in the second game in the 1996/97 season and missed the rest of the season. He was never the same player after that and never got the big money move he was after.
His interest in playing for Ireland was resurrected during Brian Kerr's tenure, and even though we were short of forwards he was way past his best by then.
Shane was robbed on Saturday!
He was on the line, waiting to be introduced against Manchester United, when Graeme Murty got injured so Long had to take his seat again as he couldn't replace the right full-back.
Your chance will come again Shane.
Same thing happened Henry in the World Cup final in '98, he was going to come on, but Desailly got sent off
Shane has been called into the Ireland U21 squad to face Luxembourg next Wednesday.
Shane came on late against Chelsea on Saturday. Didn't look out of place. Chased everything and caused a few problems. Could have done with a bit more time on the field. Lita was rubbish!
It was never going to be easy for Reading against Arsenal but I thought Long showed a lot of promise and certainly wasn't phased by the opposition. He battled away. Hope he starts v Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday. He did well in that competition last season.
Long scores.
Liverpool 4-3 Reading
Come on the royals.
5 minutes to go.
In my opionion Shane Long is better than Doyle! Anyone agree!?
I think potentially he could offer more than Doyle ie more of a presence in the box. The few games Ive seen him play, he seemed quite good in the air, which is something we definitely lack up front at the moment. But i think he has a long way to go yet, whereas Doyle is hot property in the premiership at the mo.
A premiership strike force for a 100,000 quid. Some piece of business!
Hows Denis Behan getting on Cork fans?;)
