Premier Clubs In Trouble

Just wondering what you all think about so many clubs in financial trouble.Our problems earlier in the year seem to pale in comparision to some of the clubs in the EPL.Just had a look at some of the other clubs threads and their fans really S*****g it. Cork are in serious trouble as is Cobh,Sligo,Bohs and Galway. Wonder how many of these will end up like Shels and be playing in the 1st Div next season.Cobh are thinking of dropping out all together.
Have to say we're lookin quite comfortable at the moment and would'nt swap with any of them.
Any views?

All Eircom League clubs are struggling to make ends meet even the clubs that aren't over spending on wages. They have other bills like stadium maintainace, electricity bills, and the huge officials bills every week they have a home game.

Limerick were lucky enough that an investor came forward and decided to get involved. I am pretty sure that even with your investor involved you are still running a loss week in week out as all teams are.

It would be great if teams could have investors to clear past debts and enable us to live within our means like some teams are doing this season like Athlone and Limerick and a few others

As for the original question, the league is a jokeshop from top to bottom simple as that.

Clubs run by bona fide fools.

Over priced dross players.

Over priced dross football.

Absolutely no light at the end of the tunnel. (The Poison dwarfs wage cap idea is as ridiculous as the man himself.)

I'm going to make a bold prediction and state that in five years time there will be at most twelve senior football clubs in the Republic of Ireland.

We are struggling but have managed so far this season. No wages missed which is always a big plus

Nah man, like I said I don't think I can get myself across properly with a keyboard and would hate to start any uneccessary rows due to misunderstanding so will explain his philosophy to you Saturday.

Anywho, Premier clubs in trouble.................

This league is fcuked unless its structure is completely overhauled. We all need to be put into the one division for a few seasons that at least we have a few big gates during the season. Things like this will at least help clear past debts and give some of us sticking within the rules a clean slate to play off.

It amazes me how much the referees are getting paid in the first division and that is one of the issues that needs to be addressed immediately before it breaks clubs

Would twentieth placed Athlones gate against a second placed Pats or a fourth placed Derry really be enough to start clearing debts?? :confused:

Any club which is breaking because of referees fees has no place in senior football.

It would for teams that are operating off very low team budgets and would sure be better than what you will see there on Saturday

Cant think of many other jobs that would pay over €200 for an hour and a halfs work. They earn more than the average industrial wage for less than 15 hours work a week if they get a couple of games.

If the team budget is that low then the debts shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

One division leagues with large number of teams don't work, absolutely no incentive for anyone bar the top two or three.

By mid-season you end up with the likes of Limerick and Athlone playing one another infront of twelve people in games nobody cares about.

What you need is for a nice SPL sized league. For this to happen we'll need some clubs to go bust.

Give it about two years.

Cork City are the prime example of this. Arkaga, the clubs owners are a Venture Capital Company. In other words, they are risk takers, buyers and sellers. They bought Cork on the cheap, and took a gamble that clearly didn't work. Now, they want out. As a result Cork City will now be deducted points like Shamrock Rovers were when they asked for help due to financial difficulty a few years ago, and possibly relegated a division.

Cork also have blatantly flouted the 65% wage cap. They average 3,500 people every fortnight at home games. Taking into account people that get in for free, and season ticket holders, kids etc, they probably take in around €40,000 in gate receipts, and possibly another €5,000 in programme sales and merchandise etc. Thats €45,000 every fortnight €22,500 a week. That would enable Cork to pay €14,625, lets say €15,000 a week in wages, legitamately.

It's common knowlledge that Joe Gamble is tied into a long contract giving him €3,000 a week. Alan Matthews is on similar money. Colin Healy, John O'Flynn, Dave Mooney and Liam Kearney will make up the rest of that €15,000 a week. Ski ffs is on a basic of €70,000 and he doesn't even speak to Matthews these days. I would imagine that Cork Citys weekly outgoings are easily in excess of €35,000 a week when you take other off the field bills and staff wages and transport costs into consideration.

That in my book is whats wrong with the EL. :ball:

Rovers weren't deducted points for going into examinership. They were deducted points for lying on their license application. They sent in the 2004 accounts instead of the 2005 ones, and nobody in the league noticed until the propective new Rovers board pointed it out to them

My basis for saying that Cork will be deducted the points is that financial irregularity will show in the examinership, given that they've spent way beyond their means.

may have got the year wrong, but I'm 100% right on them being deducted points for the license rather than the examinship

It makes no difference really. It was the examinership that they were in that brought to light the irregularity. No examinership, no points deduction.

While I don't disagree with the general point that Cork have flouted the wage cap and spent excessively, it's disingenuous to only count gate receipts and merchandise sales as their income. They have several big sponsorship deals to add to that as well as fundraisers, like any club.

Whether points are deducted for going into examinership is moot as they will hammered for breaking the wage cap. I forget the penalties that were outlined but I'm pretty sure that relegation was included.

But thats not what you said. You said Cork would be deducted points, the same way Rovers were. I pointed out that they weren't deducted points because they went into examinership. So there's no precendent for Cork there.

If it happens to throw up anything against licensing, I'm sure they'll punished

According to the Indo yesterday,Cobh's account with BOI has been terminated by the bank themselves effectively closing their overdraft facility.Thats a serious problem for any company.could be the death knell for them i fear.Cork forced to sell Mooney for peanuts.
Could be a very small Prem league next season if all these clubs get points deducted!
