On an almost related topic I was thinkg when I was watching Austria and Germany that it must be depressing to be an Austrian fan knowing that they will never reach the levels they once scaled. The Austrian wunderteam were the best team in the world in the 30's but they will always be looking backwards. The same could be said of Hungary.
Anyway I wonder if we are going to be the same and look back on hte 80's/90's for ever as our glory days.

I saw that too, saying Ireland was the toughest match in 1988. But then again, he also complimented Julie Foudy at the end. I had to laugh at that one.
thats some compliment alright. He was the best player I have ever seen playing live - tremendous athlete, with a great footballing brain.

I remember reading that story the day after the match in the mirror. (English and Irish papers could be bought in the main German train stations). But never met anyone who could confirm it. There had been a fight on the Friday night before the game in a Stuttgart bar/restaurant between England and Ireland fans. (I was still in Frankfurt on the Friday night and knew many of the fans attacked). I saw no trouble the day of the game itself but there was a fairly nasty atmosphere on the train from Frankfurt to Stuttgart on the Sunday morning of the game.
