Il Trap seems to be working his charm.
Dean Kiely back too, and Paddy Kenny seems to be back from the wilderness as well.
All we need now is a captain with a professional attitude.

fantastic news. always felt he'd be back. . . . as for ireland.... dont get me started. i think the other thread conveys everyones opinions haha
delighted! finnans return makes a very ordinary back four (exception Dunne) look alot more reliable. if id the choice between finnan and s.ireland it would be finnan hands down!!! :D
Very good news, I for one didn't think he would return, glad it looks like I was wrong, we now have a half decent defence(rather than a quarter decent one)
yes the other thread does convey everyones opinion, more want him back than dont simple as. The people who dont want him back are more vocal thats all. The stats dont lie.
As for Finnan great news, fantastic, good work by Trap
I think Trap used the wrong words. He was saying that Finnan can't play in these 2 games but "In August..sure he'll come back". I think he meant to say he was confident he would come back. FAI.ie use the word confident too.
Good news if he is back we will need all the best players we have for WC campaign
top stuff I am very happy with that news :):):)
He's vital for the qualifiers. So much better than Kelly - although Kelly is still learning, might turn into a top defender. But Finnans experience and quality is essential
good man finnan - great to have you back. :)
Finnan is one of our best players right now so this is fantastic news and will be a big boost for the World Cup Qualifiers ... hopefully all of our key players can stay injury-free and some of the younger talents can get good quality experience.
Cant find any confirmation of this on either RTE, FAI or Steve Finnan site
What about Finnan as captain for the upcoming qualifying campaign?
I thnk you're having us on! :o
Seriously?
Dont get me wrong, Im delighted he' s back. But this is someone who retired from international football a few months ago.
Obviously he didnt have much reason other than maybe the manager situation if he's happy to come back so soon.
Good player but hardly captain material
He's an experienced talented player, if hes back in the fold, this shows hes committed to the fold.
Fair enough on your comment about him retiring though, might send out a bad message to the rest of the squad.
Good stuff stevie, great to have you back
Can't find it anywhere. Hopefully he'll be back. Just a pity that he is not first choice at Liverpool anymore.
Liverpool have signed Swiss international right back Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.
Does this spell the end of Finnan at Liverpool considering he hasn't been 1st choice since the start of the season?
Finnan back! Superb! Premiership standard Right Full
O'Brien back! Super! Premiership experienced Centre Back
Kenny back! OK! Top end of Championship Goalie
Kiely back! Good! Premiership experienced & safe Goalie
Ireland back! Superb! Premiership standard Centre Mid - with Goals
Westwood called up! OK! Now playing same level as J Murphy
We do not have an embarassment of riches people, if Trap get all these back, it WILL improve our chances of Qualifying for World Cup! Ask Derby, Sunderland & Birmingham, there is a big big step up from Championship to Premiership, so the more Players we have PLAYING at premier level, the better for our chances!!
I'm not trying to spark another S.Ireland debate.
Also, regarding Westwood, Fenlon had a couple of EL goalies in U23 Squad, so they have been recently assessed, and why not call up a new face to be 3rd choice? I would have thought Supple or Randolph, but it makes no odds.
Finnan in trouble now at liverpool i reckon. Liverpool just got in another right back....
Fan Fuppin' Tastic thats made my day. I wonder is it any coincidence that it comes on the day Liverpool sign another right back
Finnan linked with a return to Fulham: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footba...9&siteid=89520
Would be a good move for him, IMO, with Degen signing for Liverpool, next season they will be three recognised right fulls (Finnan, Arbeloa, Degen) all vying for the one spot
Fulham would be a great move for him I think. He'd be their first choice right back and would probably start all 38 league matchs if he stayed healthy. With Liverpool I'm not sure he'd even be in with a shout anymore......he's getting old, wrong side of thirty now.
It's not really anything that we don't already know, but this is on the official Liverpool site:
FINNAN CONSIDERING IRISH RETURN
Steve Hunter 04 June 2008
Steve Finnan has revealed he is considering coming out of international retirement to play for new Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni. The 32-year-old turned his back on international football after the Republic of Ireland failed to qualify for Euro 2008 under the previous manager and former Red Steve Staunton.
However, the Republic's new Italian boss wants Finnan back in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers, and the player has said he will talk with Trapattoni.
Ireland's first qualifier is away in Georgia on September 6.
"We're going to have a chat," said Finnan. "When a new manager comes in that's normal, and out of respect you have to do so.
"The opportunity to work with someone of that experience is very tempting. He's got a great CV and he's done really well at lots of clubs. Everyone in my position would consider it.
"No deadline's been put on making a final decision but I take it he'll want to know before the first World Cup qualifier."
O'Brien
Finnan
Kenny
Kiely
Ireland
Westwood
Scannell
Delaney
To leave emotions out of this arguement and working under the assumption that they are all available for selection come the qualifiers, if a club was to come in for all of these players, what monetary value would be placed on them?
Finnan - About 2 to 2.5 million
Kenny - probably 1.5 to 2 million
Kiely - a million
Ireland - about 5.5 to 7 million (the 8 being quoted in some papers is not a realistic valuation imo)
Westwood - About 2 million
Scannell - 2 to 3 million
Delaney - About 1 to 1.5 million
Any chance we can quote in €'s please, the respected currency throughout Ireland and Europe, and not the Queen's nationalistic banknote?Quote:

when you're talking about silly figures like 6m they have no relevance to the common man at all. i'd understand if you were trying to book a flight or something and wondered if it was in euro or pounds. but whats the difference between 6m pounds and 9m euro its all the same. the only signicance i have on any of these value is not as 'money' but as transfer fees. they are most commonly in pounds because the irish national teamplay in britain. and transfer fees in ireland have yet to reach figures were u can lost a million in conversion.
to come back to the point ask someone how much darren bent went to tottenham for. no one would reply 20million euro. until you can get sky sports to run a special audio track that converts all their pounds to euros on sky sports news most people will continue to refer to transfer fees in pounds.
In euros ;)
O'Brien - 600,000
Finnan - 750,000
Kenny - 250,000
Kiely - 300,000
Ireland - 5,000,000
Westwood - 200,000
Scannell - 500,000
Delaney - 300,000
RTE have a piece on it - looks positive
