Timeless Albums

I had to rebuild my PC after a blue screen of death recently and lost all of my vast music collection. As it turns out this is not necessarily a bad thing as I had some unadulterated muck in my Library. so any way I'm going to get as many really classic album's as I can to repopulate my iTunes. I've already added Led Zepplin I II III IV V and the greatest hits, The Doors Self titled album, Beech Boys Pet Sounds, Dylan's Blonde on Blonde and a few others that I cant remember now so can anyone recommend some others. I know there is a similar thread going at the moment but this is different as I mostly looking for older stuff say from the 70's to the 90's and Please no dance music suggestions

Any David Bowie album from 1970-1980, well maybe not "Pin Ups".

Ive a rake of Bowie on CD (I should have mentioned this) also have a load of Pink Floyd and Lennon everything else is pretty recent

they were 2 of the ones I couldn't remember now that I think of it. the roses one is class but I'm not mad on Doolittle although Ive only perused it briefly so maybe its a grower

As for the smiths now why didn't Ii think of that. deffo adding that to my list


Oh I should add that I've got a pretty eclectic taste in music (except electronic Dance) after watching Almost Famous and High Fidelity on the same night last week
I've realised that 70's Rock(a genre that thus far I've pretty much ignored apart from the aforementioned bands) was pretty cool, so stuff from that era/genre are what I'm really looking for

Was listening to Sgt Pepper's and The White Album yesterday. Could have been made last week and they would still sound amazing.

Agreed Sgt Pepper is an amazing album .I've never owned the White Album as I overdosed on on the Beatles around the time of the Anthology's release and bought so many beatles albums that I had pretty much all the songs from White. Consider it added. (I've got Pepper on CD)

Revolver tops them both lads!

I'm a huge Marvin fan but musically with that album, you know where it's at. That's the same reason I didn't nominate Superfly, another classic but again the music is from a different time.

Also I can't listen to Junkie Chase without thinking of this incredibly hilarious scene from the film. The laughter kicks in about 1:31, language not for the faint-hearted.

You might want to make a back up hard drive your priority ahead of loading up on timeless albums.

They're both very good albums but I know when I heard both of them first I thought "The 70s must have been class". That's it. You can tell they're from a different time. That's not fresh for me.

I'd always counter that by pointing to the Cure as an example of a band who have not had one great album, but who's Greatest Hits should be essential for anyone who loves well crafted pop songs. A lot of bands are like that in my opinion, great songs but not albums

Which I agreed with. But if we're talking Timeless albums, a collection of singles from a ten year period is 'cheating', in my book.

Yeah exactly. Altho the reverse is true for some artists. I dont think a best of Dylan works at all. Altho a Neil Young best of wouldnt necessarily be a bad choice, i'd still prefer some of his albums. Dexys as well. 3 Great albums ; One disjointed greatest hits.(altho still worth picking up for "Because of You" , " Lets get this straight from the start" and "Breaking down the Walls of Heartache"). Hot Rocks doesn’t have a dud track on it but barely hints at some of the joys to be found on the albums mentioned above.

I know we're splitting hairs here, but the guy asked for classic albums. Yes, greatest hits have their merits, I have enough of them, and the quickest way to build up a music collection would be with compilations, but for me I'm trying to focus on albums.

I included a couple of compliations, but their not exactly best of's or greatest hits. I did have to hum and haw a bit though in including them in a Timeless Albums list, even if they do stand up alone with new stuff on them, so wouldn't complain too much about them being ruled out of order.

Glad someone recommended this. For my money the very best debut LP by any band ever. There are very few albums out there that you could lift absolutely any track off of as a single. This is one of them.

The actual mechanics of the album from writing and arranging to engineering and mixing aren't rocket science at all but the whole thing just has a texture and a sense of place that makes it hang together beautifully.

It also shows what a fantastic vocalist young P.d. Heaton was.

Enjoy.

Faith and 17 seconds are two great albums. Depressing, but great.

It's good, but I wouldn't say best debut ever. I'd nominate Murmer - REM, High Land Hard Rain - Aztec Camera, and Cake by the Trashcan Sinatras. Other timeless albums I've got in my colection are, Grand Prix - Teenage Fanclub, Fables of the Reconstruction -REM(again) King of America - Elvis Costello.
