Limerick 37 accepts Finnin's resignation

Following an operational year-end review, Limerick 37 has accepted Ger Finnin's resignation as interim CEO.
The eircom League of Ireland First Division club has reportedly been financial difficulties recently and has been involved in talks with the FAI about its future.
The club was elected to the league before the start of the 2007 season to replace Limerick FC.

Manager Paul McGee was let go in December and was replaced by former Limerick FC boss Michael Kerley.
The Management Committee of Limerick 37 will take over the day to day running of the club on a temporary basis.

I think we may soon get a lesson in the distinction between expectation and hope. There is certainly a mandate for the survival of an EL side in the city/county and it is good to see that there still seems to be some degree of organisation there...but more of a silver lining, I cannot find in all of this. :(

I'd imagine, and I really mean this by way of stimulating conversation and not by way of accusation, that the questions being asked of him were unanswerable. IMO the guy realised the inevitible financial status of a club like limerick and the pressure that the person who claims responsibility for said club would have to wear.

A football club should be profitable, or at least show signs of being capable of growing profitable. Let's face it, there was a buzz about limerick football last year, but if it couldn't keep us in the green by way of attracting the necessary crowds then you can't expect much. This, of course, begs the question: Just how many people would it have taken to have made us a profit last year, and can we reasonably expect to attract that number of fans?


The only thing that could truly put L37 on track is an enormously rich investor capable of getting results without expecting or depending on a return until we were the kind of club who played a reasonably sized club in the UEFA Cup. Because, and my Limerick-born co-posters will agree here, Limerick people aren't impressed by much, in fact they are impressed by very little. Even the EPL mainstays get laughed at by Limerick people who'd rather travel to Old Trafford / Anfield / The Emirates4 times a year than to Jackman park pnce a fortnight. In the tiny minds of limerick people, we are a tiny club, in a tiny league, on a tiny little island where everybody hates us and wants to see us fail, so why give them the pleasure of watching us do that?

EL clubs are not profitable. End of. None of them have been since going semi-pro, or fully pro. The expenses, wages and maintenance are way too high to be upkept. If any club could have made money in the past decade it would have been Cork City, and they couldn't do it either and they have a huge fan base and a great professional attitude and set-up. The gates simply can't sustain the expense.

The next step for the club, in whatever guise it may take, is simple. I'm sick to the back teeth over the past 24 years of listening to 'investors' such as Pat Grace, Peter Hogan, Danny Drew, Ger Finnin et al who are going to 'put Limerick soccer back where it belongs'. Being honest, since 1984 this club in its various guises has been fit for the toilet, with one idiot after the next trying to get rich quick and win trophies in their first year.

The FAI have to step in and take complete control of the club, and appoint a well paid, commercially minded outsider to get a foundation in place. If the club starts to look and feel like a club for about 5 solid seasons, then let us start to get ambitious and seek on-field success. Until then, and I include myself in this, I suggest we all shut the hell up and start to smell the coffee and accept the situation for the dire farce that it is.

Excellent post.

I think you're right, It's time we have to take an honest look at the situation and ask ourselves if a senior team is at all feasable.
I know all the arguments about the crowds coming if the team is succesful but its a chicken and egg situation and unfortunately we're stuck with the egg.
No doubt the FAI will right things on this occasion but how many more times?

As regards the Ger Finnan situation I think its disgraceful that someone would insinuate he has taken the money.
Anything he did was to progress senior football albeit by methods that were not correct. There was no personal gain for the man.
No its time to lay off.

Mickey Webb RIP should not be on that list. He was there before Grace and ran the club well for many years.

It's not the FAI's job to run senior football in Limerick. They are responsible for the league not for clubs. We do need a proper board of directors and proper investment.

I agree with you about Mickey Webb, however he was prone to pulling the odd stroke or two, but always had the clubs best intentions at heart, so I'll agree with you there and will remove him form the list.

It may not be the FAI's job to run senior football in Limerick, but someone responsible is going to have to step in in the interim and I believe that if they appoint a full time GM then that will help greatly.

One thing is for sure. . . an Ebbsfleet united approach wouldn't work with this disparate bunch:p

what limerick need to operate like a junior clubcut costs i.e. no players getting paid
try get a few sponsers that will pick up the tab in away matches
try get a good working committee fund raising through race nites maybe a lotto
there no quick fix limerick 37 could survive with the rite people at the helm
in most junior clubs around town u have very succesfull business involved
ger finnan had no experince at running a club,business like limk37 ,the over heads are too great for limerick to survive,the club should be run like a business and thats not happening
a shame really but the doors are going to close on limerick 37 and thats FACT

I heard Finnin was single handedly behind the abduction, and alien replacement of, George W back in 1999. My sources also tell me that George W is actually a fine individual, who would have been a great asset to this world as US President had Finnin and his cronies not made their power play :mad:
