We want someone who could educate our players about the game. If Houllier came in I'd also give him a broader role to develop the game from all angles domestically and maybe encourage players to play abroad rather than second tier football in England.
I think Houllier & Jol are both very credible candidates, for different reasons.
I thought Houllier's Lyon side was one of the best CL teams in recent years.

I think he'd be good. If he gets the team working and gives them a kick up the arse we'd start improving. He did fall out with players, most notably Bellamy, but he's a whiny bítch, everyone knows it. Same could be said about Yorke and Cole. As well as that he wouldn't be working with the players week in, week out.

He won the FA Cup at Liverpool, but you can't use that to cover the dismal record he had there, taking them to also rans in the league, from which they've never really recovered. Against that Cup win, they lost three times in the Third Round to lower league opposition (all beginning with B, as I recall - Bristol City, Birmingham I think, and someone else).
Did OK in Turkey, but I will admit to a gap in my knowledge of Turkish football. Nearly took Southampton down, sacked at Benfica after two poor years, largely failed at Blackburn after a good start, was a disaster at Newcastle and hasn't been around since, I think.
He has a record of falling out with players at almost every club. Henning Berg's (I think) autobiography is hugely critical of him, basically saying he didn't have a notion. Berg went and overruled him in one game when they were playing some silly system which the players didn't understand; they got right back into the game, but Souness took Berg off and never played him again. Souness also got into a row with Dwight Yorke when creaming him in training and (I think) putting him out injured for a couple of weeks. Ended up nearly getting them relegated back to where he found them.
A dismal record, all in all.
It's Souness on a two year contract for me i'm afraid....
It's gone too far now for a Scholar of the game such as Houlier to shake them out of their general apathy. There may well be technically better managers as options but I'm starting to think there may be too much emphasis placed on the technical side of international management... After all how much exposure does the manager have to the players compared to to club football... There's no point in an international manager trying to engrain the 'Zone-al' defending in a team over a three day period for example.
The big thing now is to get the players to want to player for Ireland and to weed out the players that only half want to play... They may not even know it themselves yet.. I think Sounness will drive players out, Yes. I also think Players will play for him, and I think Players will play in spite of him... Whatever happens, there won't be the level of indifference seen today under Sounnes.
I'd prefer someone who could crack the conundrum of players like Stephen Ireland or Aiden McGeady. Talented going forward but lightweight defensively. Stan just put them in and hoped for the best.

Can't believe people on here and around the country actually want this man to manage our country.
Its not a disciplinarian we need. Its a manager who is a proven success at international level. A manager who knows his tactics, a manager who is a motivator and a manager who knows the international scene.
Graeme Souness is none of these. He is a failure as a manager, barring his bankrolled spending spree at Rangers. He is a poor man manager, he hasn't got a clue tactically and he is even more stubborn than Stan.
I really can't believe that people have gone from wanting the best for our country to wanting 'anything better than the last clown'. Because thats all Souness would be, and barely. We want, and NEED the best we can get. Souness is far from this.
Everyones entitled to their opinion.. But I think some people should reign in their hopes.
We're a country that have hired a novice Walsall coach, our Youth Team Coach, and a relativley inexperienced championship manager as our last 3 managers.... Compare that to some of the records of the names being bantared about. Is the leap of quality in the appoinment really going to be that big?

eh!! He got Blackburn promoted to the Premiership, won a cup... And left for an arguably better job.
Liverpool is an easy target... The decline was gonna happen to someone at somestage... Plenty more factors involved there than just Souness.
Left a Blackburn team that was in decline. Mark Hughes transformed them. He was at his best with Blackburn in Division One, funny that. Rovers fans were all too happy to see the back of him.

Paul McGrath offered to help out organising the defence on Newstalk's Off The Ball recently. A role he might have some efficacy in. Given how abject the defence performed in the recent Qualification tournament for Euro 2008, heaven knows it needs some help. I think the FAI should look into this offer. He would be working under the head coach/manager of the team and could improve us defensively. Given we as a national team rarely score goals, the fewer we concede the better our chances.
Unless he's going to play for us I don't think he could do much with the donkeys in our back 4.
I like the idea but you're basing his playing career on his coaching ability. For all we know he's a crap coach, he could be brilliant either, but why take the chance on our national team?Quote:
