Hey All - does anyone have an update on the GIVEN and Stephen Reid injury situations? - will they be fit and ready for slovakia and czech rep - i am hearing so many different versions of them being injured and fit - does anyone know what exactly is the situation with them?:confused:
Much as I like Steven Reid, it'd be a massive gamble playing him next month. There's no way he'll be match fit even if he comes back for Blackburn this weekend.
I expect Given tp be back, his injury sounds relatively slight.
Given has a slight groin strain but worryingly according to Sam Allardyce it hasn't shown signs of improvement the last 2 weeks:(
So, it's going to be touch and go. It wouldn't surprise me if his first game back is against slovakia....he's that important and will be desperate to play even if it's against his clubs wishes.

Stephen Reid is brutal anyway. I don't understand his fan club. He is a big lummox with a terrible first touch. He is in no way the future of our midfield, at any rate.
He was quality in the 05/06 Premiership season, so good that Alex Ferguson made an enquiry about him. The one time he has played centre mid for Ireland in the friendly against Sweden he was excellent. He'd be a perfect partner for Andy Reid.Quote:

As for O'Shea, Ferguson hasn't made O'Shea a key member of his squad, rather he has recognized him as a very versatile player (which he is), and has used him accordingly.
When Man U has a fully fit squad O'Shea is a bench player every time.
I don't even like Man U, but to claim that Ferguson is a poor judge of talent just smacks of idiocy.
Regarding Bellion, Ferguson had just signed a scout from Sunderland and upon arriving at Old Trafford he convinced Ferguson to buy Bellion. He was free so hardly a disaster

What a reaction ! I wonder would it have been the same if it was one of the more popular Ireland players, say Richard Dunne doing the same after two minutes. You can get injured at any time, and anyone who has played at any reasonable level will be aware that these things happen, simple as that.Quote:

I think its informed by the view that if fit Carr might get in ahead of Finnan at right back. I would rather Stephen Kelly John O Shea and Steve Finnan at right back rather than Stephen Carr. As a result it is an injury at the moment that could in fact improve Irelands chances of qualifying in my view.
Carr has been rubbish for Ireland for the last few years. I think the new attitudue of the Mc Shanes, Hunt Doyle, Ireland and Long has had a good effect on the likes of Robbie Keane, John O Shea and Richard Dunne but I am not so sure about Carr.
Carr has been DISGRACEFUL for club and country since returning from that career threatening injury a few years back. I haven't seen him play in a match where he seems to be on pace with the other players on the pitch. He makes hatfulls of mistakes every match for Newcastle.Quote:

With all due respect tets, I'd sooner have any one of O'Shea, Stephen Kelly, Joey O'Brien or Kevin Foley ahead of Carr at FB and obviously Steve Finnan ahead of all of the above...Quote:

Carr WAS an exceptional player in his day up until the injury that forced him out of wc 2002. since then he has struggled with form and pis sed off people by throwing in the ireland towel before hitting 30 and then coming back once things started to look up a little.
I wouldnt have him first choice but he is a valuable squad player and has definitely contributed more in terms of good performances (albeit years ago ) than the likes of john o shea EVER has in his 40 odd caps.
