Kenny Dalglish has emerged as a possible short-term replacement for under-fire Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton, according to a Monday morning newspaper report.

Dalglish lifted the English League on four occasions as manager, three at Liverpool and one at Blackburn Rovers, but has been away from the dug-out for the past seven years. He was mooted as a possible Irish boss when the FAI was seeking a new manager after the departures of both Mick McCarthy and Brian Kerr.

I think our current manager's grasp of english is bad enough without resorting to Kenny "mebbes aye mebbes no" Dalglish!!

I'd be surprised if he was interested.

Maybe they could bring back Roy to fire up the boys before the games. Gotta admire what he is doing at Sunderland. I can't wait for the day that Keane manages Ireland.

Now that would be something I'd like to see, it might wake them up a bit!! He's doing a great job at Sunderland!

Keane won't be coming even on a PT basis (unfortunately). I still don't believe Staunton will be in charge come the Wales game and that we will have some type of short-term manager.

Sadly, Staunton will still be in charge.

I'd welcome Daglish. Hell, I'd welcome John Barnes at this point. Staunton is just a mess.

They should put Roy Keane in charge of both FAI and as manager of the national team. Someone with pride in his work would go a long way.

If he was game. I would snatch the hand off Dalglish.

what about this for a world class management team - Dalglish, Kinnear and Shearer ( i know shearer has little management experience but i'm sure he'd add a lot of expertise in other areas plus he'd have the respect of the players)

I wish you were right but I just can't in any way see Delaney sacking Staunton between now and then. Unfortunately I think it'll take defeat in either (or both!) of the Croker games to get rid of him....

how often do you read this in the paper? Do the panic buttons set in for a journalist when they cant find anything factual or interesting to write about, that they start creating a story in their head come 5 0'clock and then it appears in the next days edition....

It was the same in the run up to the 0-0 home game against Switzerland, the players were refusing to speak to the press, or at least say anything meaningful, following the stories about Robbie Keane out on the town 5 days before the France game. So they jumped on a story about a blow up between Brian Kerr and Stephen Ireland that was more than 4 years old, all to fill column inches. Lazy journos, GTF

It's just paper talk about Dalgleish - filling up the back page. Whoever replaces Staunton if and when he goes will have to be someone who will accept 300k sterling a year because I doubt if the FAI can afford more than that. Won't be too many top level candidates interested in that sort of money I am afraid - possibly one of the reasons we got Stan in the first place

Dunphy said in the Star yesterday that "he believed" Liam Brady wanted the job after Kerr, but didn't want to apply. Three things spring to mind:

1. Dunphy works regularly with Brady on TV, Brady was actually asked during one of the games was he interested - he said no. Did he give Dunphy a different view in private ? If not, what is Humpty talking about ?

2. "Wanted the job, but didn't want to apply" why not ? If he was so keen surely a little old application wouldn't be beneath him ?

3. Bradys managerial record - is Dunphy suggesting that it's good enough to be Irish manager ? Disaster at Celtic. (Mind you, if Staunton is the benchmark, he's way over qualified :p )

Brady would be an interesting one. I've always like him as a media pundit. He has no real ties with the current squad either, which would rule out the backslapping mentality. I can't see him leaving Arsenal though, unless he was going to combine the two

Brady ffs. Are you for real? He's a terrible manager. He ruined Celtic and Brighton after them. Absolutely atrocious. If we are going to sack Stan let's not go backwards. I'd rather give the job to some gearbag off the street than Brady. The law of averages would suggest he'd probably do as good, if not a better job for less reward.

Sheridan should be offered the job if Staunton is sacked next month (likely) as he at least has shown a lot of promise as a manager. No manager at a higher level club would even consider taking it so we might as well go for potential and Sheridan has shown it in abundance this season.

Still haven't a clue why Stan was given the job ahead of Alridge who had coaching and some successful managerial experience and would have been commited to the job and was interested in it.

Brady = failure as a manager I am afraid.

Yeah Bradys skills seem to be in development of young players and to be fair he is doing an exceptional job at that. No way would I think he would be good at the job. I think Aldridge or Sheridan are the 2 that stand out at the moment followed by O Leary

tbh I'd be all for a foreign coach. The premiership is the new Serie A. The England football team is boring. The Irish team is boring. It's no coincedence imo. If all our international players are going to be playing in Britain at least we could get a coach in that plays attractive football. Off the top of my head what about Poland's coach that was sacked after the world cup? Someone that can get that Polish team to beat Azerbaijan 8-0 must be good. ;)

Aldridge wouldn't be a poor choice either.

The current manager and a lot of the current crop of players attitudes yowards the national team are a total disgrace - Keane would savage into them ad let them know they are an ambarassment to the nation and a total disgrace

I firmly believe you need an older manager in an international job , ok klinsi and rijkaard were not bad at all but in Big Jack we had soemone who had seen it all at every level and knew every trick in the book , this rubbish of having our coach learn on the job is ridiculous. stan is dealing with million pound players and he has been found out as clueless. they may pity him but they sure don't respect him. someone of stature is required.

He may have learned something in the interim.
That Celtic job was a graveyard for manys the manager before Brady.
Werent Brighton close to bankrupt when he was manager? Dont think he would be a bad choice purely on the basis nobody can be at Arsenal for so long without picking up some good habits.

how many young lads have gone onto play for Arsenal from the youth squad of Brady's? One maybe?

i'm wth roger milla on this one. a houllier type would do the trick. The argenintinian world cup coach (Pekerman) would be my all time favorite. he' sused to dealing with ar$e hole like tevez and crespo, so could handle the irish "brat pack". failing that I would honestly take anyone over staunton (brady, o'leary, aldo, sheridan - all the way down the list)

Has Pekerman even proven himself more than Brian Kerr? He had a squad full of world class players to work with. His substitutions against Germany were baffling and lost them the game.

Im totally with you on that one...altho he can only send them on to the manager...if he doesnt pick them what can he do....its been pointed out that a lot of arsenal acadamy graduates have gone on to have successfull careers at a high enough level. whether the figures are any better than other clubs or whether this is actually part of Bradys brief is a open to debate. Im just saying dont judge him on his time at celtic. At the time they seemed to change managers frequently.

He's doing a good job alright .. and the Man united loan players are a big help to him

Not stirring the sh1t, but Mick Mc Carthy is working wonders at Wolves. Absolutely no budget and taking rejects and small signings and they are hanging in there this season just outside the playoffs. I'm sure if they did make the premiership, he would have learned from the last times that he was up there with sunderland.

To be fair he has a great squad at his disposal probably one of the best in that divison so only now are they in a position which reflects their talents , I wouldnt put too much of it down to his great managerial prowess.

Not at all underestimating the job he has done at Sunderland but he's got quite a bit of money at his disposal aswell. I'd definitely say that Sheridan is doing the better job this season...

Sheridan has his team top of the league with a lot less resources than some of the teams around him but is working at a lower level. So it's difficult to exactly compare. However they are both only in the first year of their management careers and shouldn't be considered for the Irish job just yet. Let them learn their trade with a club team and not with Ireland. The only trouble is if they become successfull at a higher level then bigger clubs with bigger wages will come in for them. In this case it would probably be easier to get Keane on board because he is allreay a multi-millionare. I'm not sure about Sheridan's financial situation though.

Hell of a lot of money? Keane has only spent 2 million net at Sunderland.

Although personally I think Mick McCarthy is doing a better job at Wolves and would have him back like a shot.
