Cars

I'm thinking of getting a new car, I want a small sporty type of one! :cool:
Have my eye on a red Mini Cooper with the white top!! But there seems to be a lot of them about at the moment!

I'm totally clueless about cars really, and not ashamed to admit the colour and look of a car would be first things I'd go for in one...

Any ideas for me?
what cars do you drive at the moment and what would be your dream car?

Based on the fact you don't currently own i'll assume you inexperienced driving. I would recommend a 2nd hand fiesta, micra or similar. Cheap to fix & sure if/when you have some scratches no need to lose sleep about...

Unless you going to spend good deal of money most cars very similar & most stereotypes are true.

I find myself looking at replacement motor these days but too many cars to cross off list as not worth it & not enough cars on possible list...

I have a good few years experience driving!
Don't have a car a the moment but can drive

You thinking of buying new max? I hope not, new cars are for mugs, particularly with the SSIA's coming up. Fix your budget, substract €1350 for tax and the relevant insurance cost, and buy something 3.0+ second-hand. I'd recommend a '69 Dodge Charger, but if you want something a bit easier to source and service, go for an E34 M5 -- supercar with four doors for less than ten grand. Or grab an LS400/430 if you want a bit of luxury, lord it over the riff raff. (I'm going down the latter route meself, with a 400.)

(The MINI is lovely like, but common as muck. If you want a Mini, buy a proper Mini.)

its also not too expensive to buy second hand a few years old...

like the whole convertible thing but realistically will anyone in Ireland get to have the top down for more that 3 days a year

well if you are willing to put up with a bit of a breeze then its fine!!!!! also remember it looks fine with the top on as well!!!

Im learning to drive at the moment, and I thinking ahead to the kind of car I want. Always wanted a used black ford fiesta, thought it would be ideal as a first car. If I had the cash and driving experience Id love something like a BMW Z3. Good luck with finding the right car:)

drove a chipped one before, it pulled away from a GTI like it was pulling away from a micra being drivin by a granny at a traffic lights. My friend was driving the GTI and said he was goin flat out

Not partial meself, just drove one once. Floored it and nearly lost it right off the bat. Unbelievable power in those old muscle cars. Hell on petrol though!

Would the new Mini (Midi really as not that small) be classified as chic-mobile...?

New Bettle seems to be definitely a chic motor.

Well, yes, it is a Toyota. Except it's even more reliable, and it's depreciates at more than ten grand a year, putting a '96 100k+ luxury saloon at around 10k right now...

Not as much as the Beetle, but it is perceived as one by many. I quite like them and I'd buy one as a tenth or eleventh car if I was loaded; but then I quite like the Ka, and that that's perceived as more of a chick car than both. (If those people had driven a sporty Ka, they'd change their mind.)

I don't know POS. I've never really looked into that. Pretty expensive I'd imagine. Aside from the cost of getting it shipped over, you'd probably get ripped on insuring it, knowing the lovely low cost at home!
There is even a company in the UK that does LHD to RHD coversions!:eek:

Paul,

It costs about �1000-2000 to have a car shipped from the States, depending on how you handle it. If you get the work on the far side done yourself, and you have it shipped in an open container - and risk having bits nicked - it'll be the low end; if you have a professional company do the work for you, and ship it in a closed container, it'll be towards the high end. There's also VRT to consider, but that should be very little on a classic.

thanks adam, how do you know so much? if ye dont mind me asking. the 20,000 was actually including the price, as i thought it said 23,000 dollars for the car....?

Ya VRT would have to be paid when ye dont own the car from the states...something i didnt think about!

ah well when i move back home permanently i will seriouslly look into this. thanks for the advice, both OSSO( as relevant as it was!) and dahamasta.

btw OSSO, will you buy me one over there and ill send ye on the money at a later date... ;)

I'll be importing a big block Road Runner in 2-3 years, so I've looked into it. A good place to ask people about this is on the ISRA forums, those guys have imported plenty of yank tanks.

You really don't need to think about it on anything >30 years old. If there's any VRT, it'll be relatively small. So will motor tax (€42) and insurance, and of course there's no NCT.
