I think it's could by Myler, i also heard Paul Byrne is about a month away from full fitness if all goes to plan for him. There was some english club's in for Dicker as well I heard, UCD will find it hard to hold onto him and Quigley this year.

I wasn't at the match so can't make any comments on the performance but I think it's a little premature to be worrying about the team after one friendly. Monaghan had played a few friendlies already so were always going to be more match fit and sharp.
Hmm. He hasn't been great for Longford since he went there. He did well in Drogheda though so hopefully he could recreate that form again. We are a bit desperate too I suppose.Quote:

Brilliant. He's still the coolest player to have played in Belfield.Quote:

Thats the thing with UCD they get good young players because they play
them, whens the last time they had a big signing ? It's a shame really because with the likes of Quigley, Hurley, Dicker, Kenna and Byrne as well as some of the more experienced players they have, and 2 or 3 more good signings they could really have a team thats challenging.
Yeah, they're entering the second year of a two-year contract. We seem to have changed to two-year contracts lately, which is good. I've heard Tranmere were sniffing around for one.Quote:

Then there's the U-21s - champions twice in a row - and players like Jimmy Lee Matthews signing from England...
Still, badly need a forward. Wouldn't want to be relying too much on Paul Byrne for next season purely on the basis of nine games!
In today's Sun there's a piece about Charlton looking at Gary Dicker. Pete Mahon say's he going no where until the end of the season in the interview which is great for UCD but Would it not be better to sell him before his contract runs out?
Can I take credit for this after my fanzine article a couple of years ago?Quote:

I don't know if we'd lose out on much money by holding on to him until the end of his contract as we'll still be due compensation because he'll still be under 23.
yeah but surely theres a difference between someone buying out a contract and just getting compensation. It's a nice position for UCD to be in if they can afford to wait.
I think it's better for both the club and Gary that he stays until the end of the season. His development will fare better playing first team games here than English reserve football. He's even managed to tie down a place in the national setup playing for UCD. Let us just hope that he gets some competitive U-21 caps so we have a good arguing point in any tribunal. Cherry Orchard will also be due some of the fee.
I doubt any club in England would take a player from the eircom league to sit on the bench especially after what Kevin Doyle has achieved, I do agree though he is better playing in the eircom league than reserve in England.
I don't know too much about the ins and outs of it but I'd imagine buying out the contract is just a matter of them making an offer. If it's substantially above what we'd get in compensation, it might be too good to turn down. Otherwise having a premiership standard player  in the team for a year would probably be worth more than the difference. Don't forget the pretty small fees that Kevin Doyle and Wes Hoolahan went to Britain for, we're not going to be offered 500k or anything close.Quote:

Exactly so we may as well hold onto him for another year as the amount of money due won't be much less.Quote:

Am I right in thinking that we'd be due some portion of any future sales in the same way as schoolboy clubs are?
To the best of my knowledge anyone who is deemed to have had a hand in developing the player and invested some time and money into him is due a portion of any future sale. I think Crumlin Utd. get a piece of every Robbie Keane sale. Maybe someone can put up the official guidlines on this?Quote:

No poor student I'm a St Pat's fan, I have to say though I do like UCD and it would be a shame to see them break up if this new league thing happens.
Without UCD players like Dicker Quigley Byrne and such would be warming the bench for the likes of Shels.
That's what I thought. I'll have a look at the FIFA site for details.Quote:

I think the rule is that 5% of the transfer fee gets divided between each club he was at on the basis of how many birthdays he spent at the club between 12 and 21. So, for example, if a player was with UCD for 3 years, UCD would get 30% of 5% of each transfer.Quote:

If Gary were to move to a Premiership team (like Charlton), and what with him being only 19 now and with three U-21 caps, including one as captain and one goal, I wonder are we getting ahead of ourselves talking about compensation for Gaz getting a senior cap?
That percentage of subsequent sales is actually very very small. Imagine Gary scoring the winning goal for Charlton in the FA Cup Final against Chelsea, who subsequently buy him for £17m - we'd still only get £17m * 5% * 20% = £170k. Though I suppose it's better than a kick in the teeth, which is what we'd have gotten under the old rules.
Anyway, let's return this thread to planet Earth...!
He was bought. There was a minimum fee clause in his contract.Quote:

To put that in context though, that would be a record sum for a transfer fee from the EL, never mind money for a transfer with nothing to do with us.Quote:

you have to remember as well he with you only a year or so. So it's not like UCD moulded him for years or spent a whole lot on his wages, but i suppose the one thing they did do was give him a platform to play on, bit was that out of choice or have they got no one else to play. Either way I'm sure UCD will get back what they spent and more. How long was Doyle at Cork for ?
Doyle signed at the start of the 2004 season from Pat's and left I think ten games or so into the 2005 season. Cork got money because he was under contract, not because of the U-23, two-year-stay rule.
well it wasn't bad business for Cork really was it ? The fact is there not Reading and never will be, and the player wanted to go. And I think if a young Irish player gets offered the chance to play at a higher level in there head there gone already. I'm sure cork are p****d off at how much Doyle is worth now but they couldn't offer him that platform even if he stayed with them all his career, he would never be worth the money he is now.
Fairly short article...I'll post it up as I can't find any link.
Realistically, if we got another good season out of Gaz - who'll be here three years in November, not two, so you can add 50% to the figure I worked out above... - got E100k say and brought Ronan Finn though, who looks a very similar player, I suppose we couldn't complain too much.Quote:

The transfer window won't open again for English clubs until August I think, so he'll be around for a while. I can't tell you the exact date young Gary joined but he was certainly there the season before last when we won the First Division. He definitely scored a goal of two and figure somewhat towards the end of the season.
He made his debut in the League Cup Quarter-final against Bohs in about June 2004 - probably had just signed at that stage. Alan Cawley also joined mid-way through a season, but the club back-dated his contract to the start of the season, so Dicker would probably technically be with us two years already.Quote:

yeah i taught so it seems like a bit of a mad rule alright ... I'm sure if Charlton want him they'll get him, who knows he could be at UCD for another year, talk is cheap and things fall apart all the time in football.
Thread on the Charlton Athletic forum about him.
Link below may save time searching that forum.Quote:

Yep, good call, sorry...
In fairness, only one person called him that, and I don't think they keep that close an eye on the First Division or the eircom League. Plus it could easily have been a typo.
Dicker impresses Charlton scouts
Charlton Athletic are interesting in signing UCD midfielder Gary Dicker after the 20-year-old impressed scouts at the Madeira International Tournament.
Dicker was one of the stars as the Republic of Ireland Under 21s won the prestigious tournament in Madeira last week and Charlton sco uts were quick to relay reports back to Addicks boss Alan Curbishley.
Read more at www.breakingnews.ie
If he does well next week in the U21 match it looks like he could be off.
Just seen this link on skysports.

I know Pete, their one-liners are cleverer than on this site. Positive too.Quote:

yeah and from what i read on the charlton forum they didn't seem to bothered about a price like that.... If UCD got money like that for the lad they'd be sorted for the year....;)
I think it would be more beneficial for Dicker to move to a Championship team, play regularly and gain experience(Kevin Doyle) rather than moving to Charlton and playing reserve football.
Charlton are not the only club sniffing around Dicker... they are the only ones to have gone public!
