Should be interesting:rolleyes:.
what's with the roll eyes
Should be interesting to anyone with an genuine interest in the Irish team.
Wish I had the luxury of watching it :)
"he's in the building" declared the plank kenny but still not on.
its hard not too laugh at pat after watching apres match.:D
i'm looking forward to hearing in what Stan says.i was very pessimistic in first hearing him on getiing the job initially but i'm getting more and more optimistic as time goes by with robson stuck in it also.:)
EDIT:
staunton is coming on now!
The man makes you uncomfortable just by watching him, one of the lads I was watching it with said it was like School Around The Corner, such was the amount of prodding Kenny had to do. "And you've brought your tin whistle with you..."Quote:

I know its a short time since he got the job but im not looking forward to the months ahead under steve, didnt have much to say last night, had to be coaxed on a few times,i cant see how hes going to motivate the senior team, just goes to show what cheap skates the fai are, putting in an ex player with no experience whatsoever roll on sweeden.... :(
I don't think he'll have a problem motivating players. He may look relaxed getting interviewed by Pat Kenny but he's different when he needs to be. I wouldn't say he's as dull as Liam Brady anyway. :)
he was saying how he has been at these big tournaments and thats gonna help him but i dont really see how that is the case
at least he didnt say "i'm the gaffoooohhh"
Thought he came across fine .. If people actually give the lad a chance instead of writing of his chances im sure he will do fine ..
I thought he came across well also, I dont know what to make of his appointment, but the decision is made.
Yep I'm nervous about our footballing future too. As everyone in football knows, it's an essential characteristic of a successful international manager to be charismatic, charming & full of witty anecdotes on chat shows. We should have appointed Jimmy Tarbuck instead. Then we'd be certain to get good results.Quote:

Lad's I really do not think Staunton's inability to appear comfortable in front of TV camera's has anything to do with his team management skills.I guess presenting yourself as articulate and confident looks good but not if you have no man management techniques and unable to motivate your team a skill i think Staunton has.
I work for a big organisation and see many managers(not them all) who love to be in the lime light. They stand confidently in front of hundreds of people informing them what they have done and can do to improve the NHS service. They never do anything, but like to fool people into thinking they do. They have less respect from their junior colleagues as they are all promise and really don't have the ability to turn their promises into reality. Staff don't work for them because of this and nothing gets achieved. However, I also see the other side of the coin where you have a manager that does not appear to be as confident, wont hog the lime light, hates public speaking etc etc but will get the job done. Why? Because he does not bull ****,people work for him and he always lives up to his promises...I know which type of manager I would like to work with.
good post about the different styles of management.
altho I dont see how people are making assumptions about stauntons ability at man management when we have no evidence to suggest he has or hasnt any.
What we do know about Staunton is that he played at two top clubs in the Premier. That he was a key player for both Liverpool and Aston Villa. And had an excellent WC in 2002. According to Ron Atkinson he was a major influence in the dressing room when playing for Villa. According to M.McCarthy he was a major influence at WC 2002 off and on the pitch. Once blessed with pace he helped organise an Irish defense with Ian Harte!, Gary Breen! and Kenny Cunningham at WC 2002 concede just 4 goals in 4 matches while slower than a tortoise. I cannot remember once in his 102 games for Ireland Staunton not putting in 100%. Will it be enough? I hope and think so.
ha, I remember a lot of games for macarthy when he was bordering on inept. and I notice he said his aim was qualification for the world cup and the euros will be a "bedding in" period. I think I said this will be the case in the very first thread I posted in.are people seriously happy with that? its sad that people let their english club allegiances colour everything. its a pity they just dont go live there and supposrt their national team...oh wait a minute.....:)
Klein4 your not by chance the unfunny one of the Gervais family ? And has that Black glass building I helped put up in the 80's in the center of Uxbridge fallen down yet?

em you lost me at klein4.......basically I am sayin that the support for staunton could only be based in hope that he turns out to be a good manager rather than any value judgement on his managerial skills yet the way people who critisise him and the decision to appoint a novice to the highest managerial post in the country are shouted down and dismissed as idiots just doesnt add up for me.Quote:

There is a fine line between managing peoples expectations and preparing the ground for failure...
What was the exact quote that Staunton said?
when you reimburse me for the price of my paper I will furnish you with the information contained within...until then buy your own ya mooch...
hey Klein how often to many people in here post up articles from subscription websites.
Whatever paper it was they got their quotes from the Late Late show. "We'll be certainly trying our best to qualify, don't worry about that" was something he said. No matter what he says to the media, his main objective is getting us to Euro 2008, there's no question about that.
what do you want me to do ?
leave work, go home, scour the house for saturdays herald, find the quote and post it on this board? "what was his exact quote?"
I'm not dustin hoffman in rainman. I cant remember!!!!!
Well the Herald is trash so if its a quote it will be in other papers also, so you could do a search on the times, or on unison or on the examiner. I dont think that the Herald had an exclusive interview with Staunton recently so therefore any quotes will be from other interviews or the press conference.
I think Staunton has stated that he will be trying new players over the next while and his ultimate aim is to qualify for 2010 however that does not mean he has given up on 2008. He stated this on the Late late show the other night.
Fact is, it is you who are insinuating that the Euros will be just a "bedding in" phase and that he is "preparing the ground for failure". These are your quotes, not Stauntons. He actually said "We'll be trying our best to qualify, don't worry about that". The reality is quite different to what seems to be in your head.Quote:

what he is and has said is " we will try our best but it is goin to be sooooo hard cause we have to blood new players and did I mention we are only 4th seeds now, which really has nuthin to do with me and sure wasnt the previous regime responsible for letting good sons of erin like wayne rooney slip thru our fingers and declare for the brits and sure wouldnt we all really prefer to play in south africa than have to go to expensive oul switzerland...????????"
I think you will find the exact quote in last tuesdays herald. Paul Hyland exclusive if I remember correctly.
Well I think people can no see that the best option is to ignore all posts from Klein 4 if you want to deal in intelligent debate about football. The wind up merchant has shown his colours. Maybe I am giving him too much credit by suggesting that he is winding people up.
why do you always feel the need to address some imaginary audience?? I am sure people can make their own mind up( if they care.) what you call intelligent debate I call mutual back slapping and copy and paste!:)
one mans fruit is another mans poison.;)
Can't find this exact quote or any like it in last tuesday's herald. Again, it must be just in your head. What I do know he said is "We'll be trying our best to qualify, don't worry about that".Quote:

At least that way people can actually see the quotes rather than imaginary ones from your head. Also this is a forum for debate and there is nothing wrong with agreeing with somebody if they make a good point which is well argued and is based on facts and a little bit of opinion. I woudl say this even if I did not agree with the opinion. What I dont like is infantile debate.
what you dont like is people who disagree with you on a thread so then you spend the rest of your time tryin to show them up on anything else they post. now thats infantile.
I have disagreed with many people on this, Karlos been one and I have never tried to show him up once. If he puts up a post that I agree with or is well argued I will tell him that. So to be honest that is a weak argument you put up there as there is no evidence of it. As I said I dont mind having different views to people but its infantile arguments without research that I find boring as they come across more as rants.
I stand by what I said.
That I think they are making excuses now for the Euros which will be used not to bed in players but to bed in the manager. its the general impression I have got from listening to interviews with Staunton and Delaney. and I find it a bit disappointing as a supporter that there will be another tournament we wont qualify for.If I am proved wrong and we hit the ground running and go all out to qualify then all the better!!!
What I was posting against was this sort of nonesense which you cant stand by as it was never said by Staunton or Delaney.
"eh not really.
hes hardly going to say " we are not going to qualify"
what he is and has said is " we will try our best but it is goin to be sooooo hard cause we have to blood new players and did I mention we are only 4th seeds now, which really has nuthin to do with me and sure wasnt the previous regime responsible for letting good sons of erin like wayne rooney slip thru our fingers and declare for the brits and sure wouldnt we all really prefer to play in south africa than have to go to expensive oul switzerland...????????"

well until Greenbod scans in pictures of himself going thru last tuesdays herald than that quote stands.
No if you are putting up quotes from Steve Staunton its up to you to prove that he said them and find the source of them otherwise it is just mis quoting Steve Staunton to suit your argument. Either we are going to follow some sort of protocol on this site and not to mis qoute international manager, well then the thing is a free for all.
Here's the evidence you're looking for. As you can see I examined the Herald in great detail...............Couldn't find the quote you mentioned!Quote:
