What a strike - goal of the season contender.
cant wait to see it on motd. move over robbie we now have a proper striker
Damned straight. People forget that we don't have a raft of quality alternatives. If we were like Brazil and had lots to chose from, fair enough.Quote:

Lawrences goal was a cracker as well altho shay should've got to it .ball skimmed under his hand- the chip/half volley from elliot was superb, took a age to drop and then slammed the crossbar-Very impressed with stephen today..some great running off the ball, caused boumsong untold problems...good to see some genuine talent emerge to challenge keane, might make him buck up his ideas a bitQuote:

Just seen the goals and Given probably should have got Lawrences shot. It did hit a Newcastle players arm on the way though which brought it further towards the post.
I didn't see any of the Sunderland goals but clearly if Given is conceding 2 goals to Sunderland he is getting sloppy & needs competition for international place.
i saw the goal on TV3, it was awesome.
As for Robbie, he isnt on the bench for nothing. At least with Elliott he doesnt think he is a prima donna and we dont have to watch any stupid celebrations.
Glad to see that not seeing the goals doesn't stop you from putting forth an opinion. You're right, how could a goalkeeper behind the world-class Newcastle back 4 not be culpable for conceding goals! Given should retire from international football now!!Quote:

hello ? are you talking about the same given to performed heroics for ireland at international level ? he may be letting goals in at newscastle but thats more to do with the fact that newcastle are crap at defendingQuote:

It was a nice goal and he was unlucky with the lob. Sunderland are very poor though so hes got one year in the Prem then it's back to the Championship. Might be good for him. Light up the Championship for a half season next year and then get a transfer to a decent team.
Sunderland in the second half were the best team, from what I've saw of him in the last few games, he will not be going back to the Championship.Quote:

I'm delighted for him because of the honesty he showed in his performances for Ireland. That gets my respect everytime.
Or superstars from Tallaght.Quote:

will he though?
is he a great goal scorer or a scorer of great goals?
More the former I'd say Paul. He can poach ugly goals too.
just put him into my fantasy football team, I have a good feeling about him :)
He might score some goals like that but the proformance was not really good by him. He has not really proved himself yet for Ireland as he does be poor for us.
he has always performed for us imo, 1st half against the Faroes excluded. :)Quote:

eirebhoy he has a point though, whats the point for example in us playing friendlies or some crap cup in the summer when we should be playing in the world cup, and because certain said players didnt get us there????
I don't see where you're coming from at all mate. :) His point is that Elliott has been poor for Ireland. He certainly has not.Quote:

Thierry Henry didn't really impress against Ireland in Dublin, yet he struck a cracker which proved to be the difference between the sides. I'd have settled for a poor performance from Elliot if he had scored a goal like either of his last two for Sunderland.
Keep it up Stephen. You're one bright light in the gloom of Irish International football at the moment.
i was taking the side, or making the point that its no biggie someone performing in friendlies, i mean ireland are the world cup holders of friendlies. so indirectly when we are playing these friendlies in the summer or a cup thingie in the summer because our players, such as elliot only really performed in the friendlies and did nothing in the proper i.e. competitive matches where it mattered. having said that elliot was the only player that played at all in cyprus.Quote:

i think that clears it up a small bit! :)
Elliott played friendlies against Croatia, China & a bit of the game against Italy & impressed to a certain extent.
Elliott played competitive games against Faroes, Cyprus & Switzerland and impressed, first half vs Faroes excepted.
So his competitive performances have been at least as good if not better than his friendly performances.
And anyway, why shouldn't you judge a player's performance in a friendly if that's all you have? Performing well in friendlies earns you a shot at the real thing & as far as I'm concerned Elliott has done more than enough to be considered as a starter for Ireland.
I've said everything I have to say about Elliott on previous posts. Paul, I know you read many of them & you'll know I've been consistent in lauding his goalscoring instincts. In fact my first ever post on foot.ie was about Elliott.
pretty much what I was thinkin at the time- class goal ,honest performance ,no dramaQuote:

Many of them!!! I have read them all stuts, its what passes the day at work for me ;)Quote:

Point taken on proving yourself in friendlies to make it into the competitive games, but you have to see the side i am taking also.
Elliot didnt do much against switzerland in fairness, he held the ball up well in cyprus and took his goal brilliantly an example of a poacher in my opinion ( as you pointed out), but i dont beleive he played great against faroes bar winning the penalty. He did however play very well against italy when he came on and did well against china, but these are only friendlies.
anyhow time will tell, i hope it goes the way of your beliefs however :)
