Dawson Devoy gone on loan from MK Dons to Swindon Town. Move to England hasn’t gone as anticipated.
https://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/news...-dawson-devoy/
Think Devoy will be home soon enough. Easy to underestimate the step up going over to England after a solid domestic career. Probably more don't make it than do, even with a decent amount of senior football under their belts before they go.
Screams to me of a lad who should be giving it a crack somewhere he can get a deal on the continent and should have an agent looking there for him, not looking at the same league for a move.
Cristiano Fitzgerald on trial at Dundalk ahead of a possible loan move
https://www.independent.ie/regionals...506612511.html
It's a strange one for Devoy, he was first choice for them in League One last year but has fallen out of favour with their new manager this season after relegation. 44 appearances last season, versus 14 this season.
I think it's unfair to say he underestimated the step up, considering the amount of time he saw on the pitch since moving over. He's only turned 22 this winter as well.
League Two is not the league a player like Devoy thrives in. He's a far more technical over physical player. He'd be better suited to a continental move than swaying between lower EFL divisions in England.
It's not so much that he underestimated it, as others did. When he was flying in the League of Ireland a couple of years ago a lot of people thought he would tear it up at MK Dons. Hasn't happened unfortunately. Danny Grant was another similar case. He got injured early on, but even when he came back he struggled really. It's a hard move to make, especially for more attack minded midfielders, partly because lower league teams in England value different attributes to Irish clubs, but also partly because it's a step up that not every player can manage.
Conor Coventry signing for Charlton Athletic permanently (barring any late hitches).
Blackburn Rovers are willing to pay a £500k release clause in centre-back Connor O'Riordan's contract at Crewe Alexandra, according to the Lancashire Telegraph (10 January) but the clubs are negotiating about the structure of any transfer fee. The paper had previously reported (29 Dec) that six other clubs, including four in the EFL Championship, have also been monitoring O'Riordan (20) who has made over 50 appearances for Crewe and is a Republic of Ireland U-21 cap.

Ronan Curtis joined AFC Wimbledon until the end of the season.
Update: According to Adam Scully at therealefl.co.uk, Blackburn wanted to pay the transfer fee in instalments, but Crewe Alexandra want all the money in time to allow them to bolster their own squad in this window. A similar instalments plan by Preston NE has likewise been rejected, and because of Financial Fair Play issues Preston would have to sell somebody to buy O'Riordan. So he may end up at Blackpool, who have also been interested in him.
O'Riordan (20) leaves Crewe Alexandra for Blackburn, on a 4.5 year deal. (BBC Football, 25 Jan).

Every transfer I could find in the January transfer window

A decent window for Irish players overall I think. No big money moves but plenty of the younger lads getting moves that will hopefully see them get more game time. A shame that Zak Gilsenan doesn't seem to have gotten a loan, and also Travers likely stuck on the bench at Bournemouth until the summer.
That's probably the most disappointing one of this window - 59 goals in 103 appearances for Middlesbrough's underage teams in his time there - 12 in 13 this season - you'd think he'd get something better than a permanent move to a lower-half League Two team. Curiously, he only has a handful of U17 appearances for us - I thought he would have been more involved.
Phenomenal amount of players on that list! Encouraging to see how many young players are willing to gain experience down the divisions and the increased interest in Italy, as well as the LoI generally. Must be a hell of a number of Irish players in the football pyramid now - seems more bouyant than ever. Great to see O’Neill, Kavanagh, Grehan and Vaughan seeking game time - always remember McCarthy saying you don’t become a player until 200 appearances. Interesting moves for Idah, Obafemi and Johnston too. Going to be a head wreck keeping tabs on players.
Greg Sloggett (27) formerly of Dundalk FC, has been on trial at Cheltenham Town and has been signed on a short-term deal until the end of the season. Cheltenham are currently 22nd in EFL 1. (BBC Football, 2 Feb)
