I've been thinking of a tutorial on how some of the stats I post are created for a little while, and made these two episodes over the last few weeks.
Episode 1 - Introduction to the data
How the player and game data is stored, and accessed
Episode 2 - Losses, Wins, and Substitutes
Explaining how three different stats were created using the data
- That Stephen Kenny is the first Ireland manager to lose two games to teams ranked outside the top 90
- That the winning margin against Scotland was the largest against a higher ranked side in a competitive game since rankings were introduced
- That Alan Browne's goal against Belgium was the fastest by a substitute since James Collins V Serbia
They are both a little technical, so some knowledge of programming is assumed, but I'd hope they're both still relatively accessible.
Not sure how many more of these I'll work on, but I'm not going to go through three stats in a single episode again!
I watched some of that.
For someone whose only experience with coding is trying to help their kid with their Python homework, you come across as at least very patient, if not a full-blown saint.
Thanks, don't think anyone had ever told me that before!
A few of my friends' kids have started getting into coding so I came up with this

Stretching the thread title a bit, I know, but I recognised Callum O'Dowda on the BBC coverage of the Commonwealth Games; he was supporting sister Jade (England), who won the long jump in the Women's Heptathlon and is second after 5 events. Mark Kinsella's daughter Alice won a gold for England in the gymnastics.
Interesting - didn't realise the connection. She's up against Dundalk's Kate O'Connor (nominally representing NI as we're not in the commonwealth - she has a connection to Newry also) in that event. Both in with a chance of a medal - though like many events in the Commonwealth Games it's a really shallow field compared to the proper athletics championships.

Jack Bonham (28) making his 3rd appearance of the season in goal for Stoke City v Swansea; Manning starts for the Swans, Obafemi and Oko-Flex on the bench.
Not a great day for the Irish forwards in the Championship: Obafemi, Idah, O'Dowda and Scully not in their squads, for various reasons; Ogbene, Parrott, Hogan, Keane and Robinson (45 mins) didn't score; Oko-Flex got 30 mins or so but Kelly stayed on the bench.
Crystal Palace looking for a new loan deal for Tayo Adaramola. Tayo got only 61 mins game time for Coventry, so he was recalled to Selhurst Park. Oxford Utd may be interested (London.football, 12 Sept)

I wonder is it possible to do that same graph for the second tier?
Fewer Irish players in the Premier League is understandable as the league gets stronger, but ideally there should be more in the second tier (which is far less international).
If there's fewer in both the Premier and the Championship, and if we assume that by and large League One and lower isn't a good enough standard, then we've got a problem...
Give me a few days, don't think ill be able to look at it before Sunday
