Mine, Rufus Wainwright...
Mine would be the Beta Band. Never got the recognition they deserved. Other would be the Boo Radleys.
Me ....and my lot
Echo & The Bunnymen. by far the most underrated...
(though I must admit us Bunnymen-fans tend to like the fact that the band's still a bit of an underground/alternative thing, at the same time we sometimes like to complain about the lack of appreciation from the outside world...)
Most underrated Irish band without a doubt has to be The Blades.
Horslips!!!!!
But seriously, there's a lot of unsigned talent around at the moment, on the Dublin scene anyway, and I assume the rest of the country too, although there is also a lot of crap out there too!
Rory Gallagher,Quite simply a genius with a guitar
I've encountered many, many plaudits from musicians of both the modern, and former era's with regards Rory.So not really underatted...i.m.h.o.Quote:

Minor Threat.Spawned the whole 'abstenence/straight edge' hardcore/punk music movement.Fans include Slayer, Rage against the machine and numerous others.
There are many many more I could list, but they may be even more so obscure for this discussion.
Would agree with that except that I felt Microdisney were even more underated.Quote:

Saw them a few months ago in the temple bar music centre (i think it was the temple bar music centre anyway  ). F**king class gig and some weird lighting for it!! (regret not being off my tits for it now :D !!)
Would BAdly Drawn Boy be classifield as 'big' and maybe not relevant to this thread? (like he only played the village a half year to a year ago) - well if he's not highly rated ill put him into this category ;)
EDIT: Just came into my head - the most underrated band were Kerbdog - they were kick a**e and if they had've been from america they probably would've been really big
I think it's important to make the distinction between underrated and unknown, so to keep it to known acts who should be much bigger.
Underrated Irish now - The Walls
Underrated Irish past - Microdisney (edit: Toasted heretic too)
Underrated other now - Aimee Mann, Will Oldham, Tom McRae, Tom Baxter, Ron Sexsmith, Grandaddy, Modest mouse
Underrated other past - Supertramp (p1ss off, they WERE class  )
Underrated here and huge in the states - Dave Matthews band, John Mayer
Never said they were unknown ;)Quote:

Most Underrated: TOM MCRAE - Brilliant. I can't recommend him enough.
Kerbdog as well I fully agree. Class.
Hell is For Heroes and Rollerskate Skinny.
NPB and of course Pony Club.
Saw them about a month ago in the Warehouse in Limerick, quality gig.Quote:

Parliament-Funkadelic and OutKast. Yeah, OutKast have done well in recent years but they had three great albums before anyone over here heard Ms. Jackson. It's far from being their best song. Or is Hey Ya.
cruacahan, most underrated, they are known world wide and have played on many foreign soils, but remain relatively unknown. anyone here ever heard of them. shane mcgowan produced one of their albums and sung on ride on.quality song.
IMO Randy Newman is the greatest lyrcist of all time, yet clowns like Neil Young seem to get more credit.
Most underrated Irish band = Bawl
Teenage Fanclub never seemed to get the credit they totally deserved.
Mellencamp or Chris Rea, both legends who never got the status they deserved.
Most underated album...
Smashing Pumpkins 'Adore'
You do know that Bawl are pretty much Pony Club now?Quote:

Hmmm, not a fan of it myself, you definately miss Jimmy on drums. And a lot of the songs are about Billy's mother dying, and him losing his faith because of it.Quote:

aimee seems treading water a bit on her latest, i wish she'd f*ck her style up a bit. but her lyrics can be superb sometimes. live she's good. billy oldham is a weird one, he seems to have his head up his own bum (re-recording his older Palace stuff with country music session musicians?) sometimes but you can't argue with his lyrics, delivery on a lot of his songs. dunno if either are underrated though? 'indie press' plaudits for both in recent years.Quote:

beatles/beach boys would be my shout in this thread (and all the old r+b artists they ripped off) :D

Yep, they broke up after a few singles + one album, then reformed as Fixed Stars, and now the one-man show Pony Club.Quote:
