Kav and whoever is better in training Stephen Reid or Kilbane. I would have said Kilbane as a cert 2 months ago, but his season seemed to tail off and Reid's really done well in the last few months, so I'd see which one seems sharper in training. Think we need to start with Kav as he can be used to keep possesion, break up their play and for his range of passing. Think Holland's form had dropped a bit too as the season went on, and Kilbane and Reid offer more to the team than him.
Gotta be Kav and Kilbane.
dont mind really either kav and kilbane or holland and kilbane would be very happy with that .. dont see what others see in stephen reid .. distinctly average player for me who has never shown enough for international level..
Kavanagh and Kilbane in center..
With Kavanagh taking over Keanes usual role... Even though it was againg China, Kavanagh really impressed me that day, I'd say he well up for it!!
Stephen Reid but is a bit of a risk, out on the wing maybe!
I would go for Kavanagh and Holland/Kilbane beside him. Kav can string a pass together and isn't afraid to get stuck in. I think we'll have to belt into the Israelis from the start and don't let them stand on the ball at all. Kilbane is good for unsettling players and getting under their skin (a shame his passing or shooting isn't up to much) so maybe he should get the nod over Holland.
We gave them far too much space in Tel Aviv and the ref allowed their defenders away with murder in terms of fouling Duff. They shouldn't get it that easy this time.
Have to disagree with you about Steven Reid. He is a far better central midfielder, as his recent form has shown, than played in the wider positions.Quote:

Brazil - Their first time together against a world class team and they both played very well, especially off the ball.
Cyprus - Nobody can replace Roy Keane's presence but his presence wasn't needed against the Cypriots and Kav did everything asked. Keane wouldn't have made much difference. Kilbane wasn't at his best but he's more of an off the ball worker and we had the ball for most of the match.
Croatia - Kav and captain Kibane both had brilliant games. I think Kilbane was MOM.
China - Kav deservedly MOM but nobody else really played well at all.
Holland-Kilbane only ever started vs: Czech Republic. - Holland was anonymous in midfield and only got into the game when played at centre half for the last 20 minutes. Kilbane played well and didn't give Nedved a much time on the ball.
So Kav-Kilbane is my preferred choice. Kilbane needs to have someone to man mark. He's better against the better teams. Benayoun could easily stun us so Kilbane can keep tabs on him. Kav can do what he always does in green.
YOu can beat facts in a discussion
Kav & Kilbane for me too, by a long way.
A guy who can run all day to break up possession and a guy with a great range of passing who can mix it physically too. And they've played together too.
I'm not sure that Kilbane & Holland would have much to offer creatively.
kavanagh is pure quality. he'll look better in the premiership than he did in division one such is the style of play. more short passing to the feet as opposed to the long punt crap in div.1
him n kilbane
Great research and puts my mind somewhat at ease with that central pairing on recollection of those games and how they did...Quote:

Match report and info on suspensions...don't read if ye don't wanna remember

Doh! Thanks. Head full of how to get a ticket for the Millenium Stadium play off I forgot about that booking in Israel. I'd go for Holland/Kavanagh since Kilbane has tailed off form wise as the season went on. However, Kerr will pick Kilbane/Kavanagh.
So will the right side be Carr/Reid (adventurous), Finnan/Reid (form) or Carr/Finnan (conservative) ?
Doh! Carr is out as well :o . So that settles right side. Finnan/Reid.
Even if Carr wasn't suspended, I think Finnan might well have gotten in there in his stead. I don't think Carr was half as bad against Israel as a lot of people said but if Finnan hasn't played his way in by now, there's no justice.
I'm a big fan of Kerr's but if we can't beat this lot at home, I'm not sure if we deserve to go to the World Cup, never mind not topping the group.
is everyone still confident of john o shea at left back ? are people thinking maybe ian harte should get a run though its hard to know how hes doing when you dont get to see him much ...
Not particularly confident, but we don't have a lot to choose from. Anyway, he went off injured in the cup final, havent heard any update about that yet though.
I reckon give Harte the Faroes game at LB, with one eye on trying to get as many goals as possible, let him take the free kicks...
We haven't given away any ridiculous goals under O'Shea. I remember him playing terribly against the Swiss away in the last campaign, as did every Irish player on the pitch. I think he'll do fine against the Israelis and is definitely better than Harte defensively.
Against the Faroes, you could be on to something, Jimmy P, although I'd be nervous of him going walkabout while some handy fisherman is standing on his own upfront...
I hope the Faroes game is as easy as you think it'll be.Quote:

It be Kavanagh holding with Kilbane ahead of him with duff on one wing and reid on the other, finnan drop to right back with o'shea left. The two centre halves are o'brien and cunningham with given goalie. keane and morrison up front
I didn't say it was going to be easy, I'm aware of their home record, so I'm saying that to try and make sure of a win, I think we can afford to play a more attacking line-up with the Faroes, that's all.
OK, fair point!
His lack of pace and poor defensive vision has hardly changed since his time in Spain. Give me O'Shea (warts and all) anytime unless it's 0-0 and going into injury time and we've a free kick on the edge of the box.Quote:

miller, healy, barret, quinn, mahon and douglas will not be forming deadly centre mid partnerships any time soon so steve reid is the one to watch.
Agreed. I have hunch it could be Steve Reid and O'Shea in a few years. Remember Andy Reid plays well centrally too. I'm still holding out hope for Miller but this is probably a bit naive. I like Quinn but he needs to step up a level. I'm hoping Glen Whelan wins his play off.Quote:

A quick aside, I am going to be home for the match and I was offered a chance to buy tickets on the North Touchline. Are these good seats?
I reckon any seats are good seats!Quote:

As long as O'shea didnt get too badly injured in the cup final and everyone else is fit that'll almost certainly be the team that starts against israelQuote:

Feck, might just go ahead and spend the money.
On that note, anyone got tickets to spare for the Israeli game? I haven't missed a home game for about three years but I'm not with a club so getting tickets is always a nightmare. PM me if you do, cheers.
Definitley Kavanagh and Kilbane.
Steven Reid has had a decent run of form the last few months - even with some MOM performances amongst them.
But a a crucial WC qualifier like is no game to be chancing our arm. A repeat of his horrific no show against the Russians at Lansdowne, is what has most of us worried I'd wager.
Kavanagh - Kilbane for me are the shoe ins. Though I'm its a wee bit worrying that Kilbane's form has dropped the last couple of months or so. Or thats the impression I've had. Difficult to be thoroughly knowledgable out here in Banff!
Maybe the end of season rest will have done well. It's not Reid's no show against the Russians that I'm afraid of, it's the entire team's no-show that's in my mind. If we stand off this crowd, they'll kill the game. Israel can be beaten comprehensively and put back in their box, I really do believe that, despite the hype that has built up around their results.
Agreed!Quote:

Any team can be beaten comprehensively depending on their tactics and how they prepare for the game.I think Israel will be well prepared for this one and the fact that they are still in with as big a chance as us, it gives them even more an insentive to do well.I still think we can win it if we go out there beliving we can ,but it will be very very close and i will be very surprised if we beat them without a struggle.I pray i eat my words.
John O'Shea and Andy Reid.
The 2 best passers of the ball we have that can play in central midfield and when you consider that our central midfielders will have loads of the ball against Israel it is logical to play the players who will make most use of the ball there.
Of course there is not a snowballs chance in hell that anyone (most notibly Brian Kerr) is actually going to understand this logic.
John O'Shea better passer than Kavanagh? My arse. O'Shea is nowhere near as good a central midfielder as Kav is. Reid-O'Shea, jesus, we'd be murdered. Teams rarely get lower than 40% possession in a match. Of course I don't understand that logic. I wouldn't even be so complacent as to play either of those players in the centre against Israel. To play both is taking the biscuit.Quote:
