A 47-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving in connection with this morning's accident at an M50 junction.

Thomas Sproul, who is from Scotland but with an address at Snowdrop Walk in Darndale, north Dublin, appeared at Kilmainham District Court this afternoon.

He was arrested at 8am this morning at the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown, the court was told. He made no reply when charged.

Judge Anne Watkin said it was a serious matter and there had been a lot of damage done.

She remanded Mr Sproul on his own bail of �1,000 on condition that he signs on three times a week with his local garda station.

He is to appear again at Kilmainham District Court on 12 May.

The incident at the M50's Lucan roundabout caused huge delays for tens of thousands of commuters as roads were closed and traffic was diverted. A number of bus services were also affected.

How the fook do you know it was all his fault? Could've been a blow out, problem with brakes, problem with steering, swerved to avoid someone etc...

I don't see how this is even news. Was there something special about this incident?

Which M50 junction was it? Was it the Blanchardstown/Navan Road one cos traffic was superb this morning as only took me 15mins as opposed to 60mins bus journey today. IMO they should just add big gates to the edges of the M50 to stop traffic entering - traffic won't get to me & i'd get to work easily :D

It was the roundabout at Liffey Valley which is Lucan/Palmerstown area. between Blanch and Tallaght just after the toll bridge on M50. Traffic was chaos this morning trying to get to work.

They couldn't have charged him with dangerous driving, without some evidence. You'll note the charge isn't careless driving. He must have been going at some speed to go through the wall of the bridge. they probably have camera evidence. For anyone trying to get into town on the lucan road , it was a nightmare. The M50 was closed for a time as well. When i said he could have killed someone , i meant,If the truck had of gone all the way over , it would have killed someone on the M50 & himself.

He was charged with dangerous driving, which means the gardai believe it was his fault. The way the lorry ended up on the bridge, it appears that speed may have been a factor.

The speed limit is 50kmh at that point or about 30mph in old money. cut out at six arrested at eight :rolleyes:

People have car accidents every day. People probably get charged with dangerous driving every day or at last weekly. What makes this "story" more news worthy than the others?

Speed doesn't necessarily have to be a factor in the going through the wall part. A heavy truck is hard to stop at any speed.

one would persume , the wall would have to be built to take a certain speed/weight of truck crashing into it.

Well, given we would have presumed the M50 would be constructed using up-to-date traffic statistics rather than ones based on 20-year-old figures, would tend to have one now presume that the wall was, in fact, most probably of papier-mache construction.

ROLMAO. This is a country where the NRA has built motorways with no crash barriers & up to recently refused to admit that they were wrong (bsed data on 30 year old US studies). I could go on...

Yeah, was it a wall or hedge the truck went through? If the NRA were that far sighted, there wouldn't be a roundabout there in the first place...

It was the wall of the flyover, over the M50 as your heading in town. The long term plan is to replace the roundabout. As it happens that stretch of road has the latest (motorcyclist decapitating) steel cable barriers.

I knew it was a wall, just commenting on the level of safety measures on the roads.

The old style barriers have in the past come off the posts and basically speared the occupiers of cars when they've been hit. The cables are now the standard, and will become more common with the introduction of the 3 lane roads (2 lanes in one direction, 1 in the other, swapping every couple of kilometres)...

while we are on the story off traffic . has anyone experinced any road rage incidents saw a guy jump out of his car blackrock at start frothing at the mouth and banging on woman's car window while she had 2 kids in the back it was a horrible thing to see

Knob-end. That's rediculous. Wonder would he have done the same things if she obstructed him (or whatever she did) while walking in the street? It's fair enough to get annoyed at the way others drive or how inconsiderate they sometimes are. Some people go looking for stuff to get thick about though (White van drivers) and it's never as bad as they try to make it out to be. If everyone is such a sh!t driver then why is taking them so long to realise that and come to expect it... :rolleyes:

Again, you don't know what she did first. Could've nearly ran him off the road and it was just a spur of the moment reaction. No doubt an over reaction, but never beeped or flashed or given out to other drivers cutting you up and nearly causing an accident? Only one step on from that....

Well, that's just it. It's an over reaction, making it a pretty dumb thing to do.
