Waterford United have appointed former Blues star Johnny Matthews to the position of Commercial Manager. Formerly a Sales Executive with Celtic Linen, Matthews will be responsible for all commercial aspects of Waterford United.
“This is a great opportunity for me,” commented Johnny. “I have a deep love of the game and of Waterford and I am looking forward to getting stuck into the job. This is a huge challenge and one that I am relishing.”
Matthews arrived in Ireland in 1966 for a six week loan spell with Waterford. Thirty-nine years later Johnny is still in Waterford and he is firmly established as one of the greatest players ever to don the blue shirt.
Johnny Matthews was born in Coventry and achieved his ambition to play with his home club. He moved to Waterford late in the 1965/66 season when Jimmy Hill told him it was for just a six week loan period. Matthews played in the last seven games and scored twice, had his loan period extended and signed permanently in the middle of the next season. He continued to play for the Blues for the next 14 years and scored 147 goals for Waterford and another 9 for Limerick whom he joined after the Blues. In that time he picked up 6 league medals with the Blues and another with Limerick as well as 3 runners-up medals in the FAI Cup. Johnny also played in 16 European Cup matches and scored against Glasgow Celtic and Manchester United along the way.
He first entered management with Newcastlewest but arrived back on Suirside to play under Alfie Hale and eventually took the reins at Waterford along with Dave Kirby. His second stint in charge with the Blues brought the First Division Title.
Johnny's greatest honour was winning league honours with Waterford but his cherished memory is scoring a penalty against Gordon Banks when the League of Ireland played the English League back in 1971 at Lansdowne Road. He was inducted into the FAI Hall of Fame before the FAI Cup final last October.
He will take up his position with Waterford United on Monday March 7.

Well I thought Partizan had resurrected all the fictitious deals that would bring in the fictitious millions that would come from a Cup win....Quote:
