Just noticed that the MFA lodged a planning application to retain the masts for the floodlights at the Cross. The notice is tacked onto the wall by the main gate, and is dated 1st December 2004. Does anybody know the story behind this?

when they put up the floodlight masts originally, they didn't put them up in the exact place they should have according to the planning permission. they are a couple of feet out from where they should be. now applying to retain them in their present position instead of having to move them the few feet.

i dunno ... i'd say that is just standard practice really. Its not MFA are the only ones guilty of this, it is just procedure i'd say.
i thought they had to be made brighter. Apparently they are not up to the LUX ? standard demanded by UEFA. I mean just compare the strength of Musgrave Parks lights with Turners Cross. Theres no comparison

The lux in most league grounds when they went up first was something like 200. Id say some of the newer ones are 250/300 but Thomond and Musgrave, pairc ui ring and Tralee are 500 as they new that the national broadcaster would be paying homage to thm a lot more then the beautiful game. In the comming seasons i can see mos league grounds bringing their lights up to european standard and the abolition of the 'four pylons at each side sindrome'

It depends on the league and is mainly to do with TV coverage, Its 800 for the likes of the premiership, 500 for English Div 1 and equivalent , and then 350 for others. Even 500 lux would be very difficult to get in Turners Cross and most other LOI grounds due to the closeness to houses.
If bigger lamps were to be used the masts would have to be higher and then there would be to much spill into adjacent houses, so there would be planning problems, and most of the cabling would need replacing so it would cost nearly as much as putting them in in the first place. To be honest there is no need for it to be increased, what is there is sufficient for the pathetic amount of games shown on television.

Was at Musgrave Park last weekend for first time in few years & compared to the cross is a kip. Floodlights are huge for size of ground but in rugby theres more need to see the ball high in the air than for football. Their stand is pathetic, open terracing & mud behind the ground.
I heard they selling their traing pitches opposite turners cross motors to fund new 6500 stand.
Was that the Munster Leinster game ... there was a few cats and dogs came down the same night ... i was going to go but being honest ... i'm a sunshine rugby supporter :pQuote:

Flood Lighting will always be compromised really unless you are willing to spend serious money, or have a Greenfield site with no neighbours. They have done a good job down the X considering the tight space and restrictions with houses being so close.
The Lux level is an average of Intensity over the whole playing surface. It would be easy to get an average of 500 lux but the uniformity would be down to nothing, There would be 800 in one area and 200 in another, It would be like running in and out of a house on a really sunny day, the players would be blinded, and Christ knows Stokes and the like are brutal enough when they can see the game. Plus shadowing would be worse, which would make it harder on everyone.
The only way to really improve the lighting would be to mount fittings along the Roofs of the two stands, and even at that there isnt alot of height there to play around with.
Another option would be to put up two extra masts on each side of the pitch but then it ends up like Tolka or somewhere and some spectators have a crap view.As I said earlier, when you combine new fittings, mast, cabling, switchgear, ESB upgrade, the cost would be as much if not more than what the original cost was, and for a ground we dont own. Unless there was a guarantee of a certain amount of TV coverage and associated revenue, from a players/ supporters at the ground point of view it wouldnt be worth upgrading.

Sure if Retention is good enough for Minister Mickey D then will be good enough for the cross.
I think all EL clubs have to upgrade for UEFA Licencing purposes, Lansdowne is the only ground in Ireland with the standard that will be required for Euro games within the next year or two, thought it was 1200 lux but could be wrong on that figure
