Gustavo Colman

Lads,
Was talking with a Turkish fella who is going out with my mate's daughter. He told me that there's this chap playing in Turkey called Gustavo Colman who is Argentinian. He said he's a brilliant player and was laughing saying he might be able to play for us with a surname like that. He said he may be going to Gala or Fenerbache this summer.

I looked him up on wikipedia and it said Argentinian people of Irish descent at the bottom of the page. Not sure how long back his ancestors go but could be worth a punt, as he doesn't seem to have played for Argentina yet.

Who would be the best people to contact in the FAI? I know nothing about him, but the Turkish league is a decent league and we're not exactly blessed with atacking midfielders!

I mailed them before about a player, they checked him out and got back to me. Unfortunately he wasn't eligible.

Lads, kind of random but on the same topic..does anybody know if Ricky Lambert of Southampton is eligible? There are rumours he is eligible for the North. Can anyone verify?

Think he's from Liverpool. Bound to be of Irish descent as everyone there has a connection to us.

Only problem with Liverpool is that it often goes back a few generations. Most Scousers feel more connection with Ireland than England though, so he could easily be persuaded to play for us I reckon if he can.

Can anyone tell me off that link why a lot of the irish descent people were field hockey players, is field hockey a posh sport over there too, played mainly in private(public) schools?

Same as rugby, they're sports that were played in the catholic run posh schools (and with alot of the english who were out there too). I remember a telenovela set in a preppy kids school where they played rugby and hockey (set in Argentina). It was very famous at the time, mid-2000's, here, lots of teen idols and many ended up with singing careers.

with the b@stardisation of the name, im gussing it goes a bit too far back for him to qualify...

I remember a thread like this awhile back. German midfielder called Manuel Schmiedebach, anything ever come of his eligibility?

That wasn't Joel Campbell, the alleged Costa Rican grandson of an Irish missionary priest, was it? I e-mailed them about FC Copenhagen's American-born Thomas Delaney when Rovers played them in the CL qualifiers last season, but it turned out he was a generation or more out.

How do you explain Patrick Kohlmann then? :p

Kohlmann actually has a German father and an Irish mother, so I assume his surname is a German sound-alike rather than a *******isation of Coleman.

Surnames are an interesting one actually. Irish surnames are quite distinctive for some reason, even McCarthy and McGeady can be easily distinguishable in another Celtic nation. I suppose they are the best indirect indicator of Irish descent, the only other indicator can be the player himself.

Grannies and mothers who don't carry their second name and whose maiden name isn't reflected in their offspring's name. Jon Walters and Joe Mason are two similarly recent instances. Or, in the words of Tony Cascarino, "of course I qualified to play for Ireland, my mother's name is Teresa O'Malley!"

There are plenty of instances of South-American footballers of Irish descent, but they often seem to be too many generations out. Diego Forlan, Jose Luis Brown, Alfredo Di Stefano and Fabian O'Neill are four examples off the top of my head.

Kohlmann's mother is from Meath, that's how he qualifies.

Call him up. He's Argentine so he must be good...

Like you DI, he has roscommon ancestry.

I know people who have spelt it Colman/Coleman and even as a first name Colman pronounced Col-man

In a similar theme, a young lad by the name of Leahy has signed for Falkirk from non-league Rugby Town. Luke Leahy is only 19 but got trials at a number of other league sides. To be fair, he probably isn't even better than any of the players in our under-19 or under-21 squads at present, but obviously has some potential. Whether or not he's eligible, I don't know but Leahy is a fine Irish name.

That turned out to be false, did it not? Well he was refused a work permit, which seemed to indicate that an Irish passport wasn't forthcoming to him.
