Waterford (Away)

Have to say im looking forward to this one.

Don't think it will be as easy as it would seem from the result against Wexford but being honest i cant see em beating us.
Talking to lads very much in the know down there and things are not right already 4 or 5 players falling out with the manager that seems to have no control there best player seems to want out already and pre seasons horrible results have continued into the 1st league game.

The RSC is far better suited to keeping the ball down and playing it around then Jackman and has a good wide pitch for Gaffney and Brosnan to cause problems.
There defence seems terrible and if our front 4 play the way they did in the 1st half against Harps i can see them doing real damage.
Paddy and Guthrie both looked very solid against Harps so if the full backs can play a bit better we should be very solid.
Some people will say the Wexford result will be a wake up call but i reckon if that was the case they would have been woken up by the hammerings by Bray and Rovers.


I know this will probably come back to bite me and may seem a bit cocky but i reckon a nice comfortable 3-0 win for us.

I am coming back from Switzerland for this (and other things) so I am obviously looking for a performance. I think Waterford will be on their toes after last week and as it's our first away game I am not expecting fireworks. However, the RSC is a nice venue, the game is a derby, Waterford were terrible last time out and we've got the potential to tear them apart. I will say Waterford 1-3 Limerick. I will be disappointed by anything less than a win.

Usually a dodgy one but even if Waterford show a marked improvement from last week I will still expect us to pick up 3 points.

Every game the team plays together the better the performances I would expect. I can't see it being anything like what Wexford did last week and as most know it would be foolish to expect a high score based on one match. I'll go for 2-0.

1-0 Limerick.

They will be very catious after their 6-0 thrashing last week, so I expect them to sit back early on. If we break them down early on, I would expect a 2-3 goal win but I am going for a late winner to make it 1-0 to Limerick. Foley to score.

IF Limerick score in the first twenty mins waterfords confidence will be shot to pieces we should kick on from there.

All about the early goal, but I don't expect Waterford to collapse either way. I think we will win, a clean sheet would be a good addition also. 1 or 2 nil maybe.

Limerick 2 nil, I wont be expecting an avalanche of goals it's too early in the season

Have to be in the supporters club but membership can be paid on the day. Think its 15 euro for the bus.

Was asked to let lads know on this. The supporters club bus is full. Was totally booked out as of yesterday.

ANother clueless night for scully if he can't get a team of this quality playing well there is something wrong somewhere.

Anyone got a match report? Preferably not from the sack scully brigade. To be fair (and ill probably get lynched for this) it cant be all his fault. From reading the updates, he seemed to make the same subs i would have. Chalk it down as a bad night and move on.

Is the manager up to the task ? The budget available to him must be close to nearly all the other teams in the divison combined. still a long way to go I suppose.

Resorted to hoof ball from Barry Ryan and the centre backs for the rest of the half.

Came out in the second half and took over playing a bit of ball.

Hit the crossbar and missed a few chances.

Equalised. Had some more half chances but conceded after a quick free and we were broke on.

Hit the crossbar again and were caught on the break again.

Clueless most the night and Waterford did their job very well.

Theres too many bad nights with scully,he has being given the resources most prem clubs would die for,he cant keep blaming the players all the time,there is plenty of quality in that squad to be winning games,he's not up the job end of story.

Sounds to me from the live updates that Waterford were able to pick us off at will on the counter.

Were we perhaps a bit too gung ho positionally? Was our defensive line a bit too high, considering the lack of pace in our defence? Was this also paired with a lack of pressure on the ball when we lost possession by any chance?

Spot on. Can't blame Scully for this one. Made the right subs I thought. Gaffney and O'Brien played well but were very wasteful with their final ball. Paddy and McGann missed sitters, both free headers. Hit the bar twice with great efforts. Disappointed with Gamble and Bradley in CM, they didn't step up when needed, especially after we went 1 down. Instead we resorted to hoof ball from Barry Ryan. Second half performance was much better but we got caught on the break twice. Improvement needed all round really but it will come.

BArry Ryan kicking was awful
Left full had another shocker very poor two weeks running now caught on the ball again and should of cost us a goal.
Bradley looks like he has no interest in playing for Limerick.
GAmble a lot of passes going astray.
Paudie Quinn didn't do a tap.
Gaffney started well he was poor 2nd half.
Behan subbed when one down says it all.
O brien was excellent gave there right full a torrid time all night.

WE have no pace in the centre half position the young lad that came on for them gave us the run around with his pace the 2nd goal Limerick conceded was shocking he ran straight through or two centre halfs he even had time to go around the keeper.

O'Brien was a class above tonight and was the only player who was really dangerous for us tonight. He ripped them apart at will, was doing his job perfectly if you ask me, beating his man, getting crosses and running at their defence. Couldn't ask for more.

Bhandarkar is really struggling and only looks comfortable when going forward. Have been saying for ages all we needed to sign was a left full and we where sorted and I stand by that. Give Shane Tracey a go back there at least.

C.Tracey was poor enough and did nothing to displace Shaun Kelly.

Bradley wasn't up to too much but didn't think he looked disinterested either.

Gaffney always seems a yard off the pace and gets dispossessed a lot. When he gets in good positions he can do well.

Purcell and Guthrie while not the quickest weren't in too much trouble until we really pushed forward and exposed ourselves at the back.

Gamble got stuck in as usual but delayed too much on the ball and got dispossessed a lot.

Behan and Quinn where very poor but in saying that we where continuously just hoofing the ball forward and dempsey in front of the back 4 meant Quinn was non existent.

MCGann did well when he came on.

Foley was much the same as Behan.

Gary Sheehan ran about but didn't get the chance to get too involved bar hitting a cracker off the crossbar.

Only thing i can add to what has been said already is Bhandarkhar and Corie were terrible but who was the only person on the bench that could replace him that man again the worst player at the club Alex Scully. This is turning into an absolute disgrace Anto O Donnell has been brilliant for the u19s and has even gotten trials in England recently and he is left out for the managers son. Someone at the club needs to have a word its gone beyond a joke.

I was saying it last night that for now I'd give pat the benefit of the doubt and say that he isn't playing any other u19 cause they are too important at the moment for the last few games. If he keeps it up when the u19 season is over then something will need to be done about it.

Even though i still dont think this would make sense i hope that is what is happening,doubt it being honest though.

Dont get why O'Leary wasn't brought on instead of McGann either having more experience O'Leary made have made more of a difference imo.

Bandharkar is not up to the job just yet, then again he is playing out of position but that seems to be the way Scully likes it. As for Paudie Quinn its the same old ding-dong, if the opposition play with someone sitting in front of the back four then he's anonymous, as for the c/m of Gamble and Bradley, it should be the envy of most clubs in the country but I havn't been impressed by Gamble since he signed and I havn't seen enough of Bradley but then again who has????

Still shocked after that performance. Okay game but way too many individual poor performances to deserve anything from the game. Gaffney was shocking, can't remember Gamble picking out his own player with a pass, despite scoring I thought Guthrie was very poor, couldn't deal with Waterford's pace when they counter attacked. Don't understand why O' Leary didn't come on when Bradley went off, really could have done with his creativity in midfield. Instead we decided to completely by-pass the midfield with long balls aimed at their full backs, trying to get long throws for Gaffney.

On the game itself, thought Waterford started very catiously (for obvious reasons) but Limerick didn't captilise on this at all. Very slow build up play in the first 20 minutes and Waterford hit us with a counter attack for their goal. Seemed to completly rattle Limerick and we were all over the place after that.

Played a bit of ball in the second half and Waterford had 11 players behind the ball for ages, as far as I can remember, their 2nd goal was their first shot on goal in the 2nd half. After we equalised, we started going back to the long balls and they just hit us on the break. Thought Derek O' Brien was the only Limerick player that had a good game.

Sounds to me like Waterford have hit on a very simple blueprint for beating Limerick.

Go 4-1-4-1, with an anchorman to nullify Quinn, and prevent Limerick from playing short triangles.

Play deep, soak up pressure, frustrate Limerick's attempts to play football and play a quick lad up front who can take advantage of the lack of pace in our defence.

Bob's your mother's brother.

Against teams who set up like this, there is little point in the short passing 4-2-3-1, as we'll just end up going long to no avail. A more direct 4-4-2/4-2-4 with a poacher type to partner Behan would be preferable in these circumstances.

He's very like gamble is though isnt he? He doesnt like to move much, just side to side. Suppose that was the thinking behind McGann instead of him.

Cant understand why people are criticising his other subs though, Garry and Dom for Paudie and Denis was pretty much what i would have done.
Need to just put that down to a lesson hopefully learned. Waterford were never as bad as their recent results suggested. Long, Dempsey, Kiely is a pretty strong spine of a team.

Makes sense now that you say it.

I think the complaints about the others subs were people thought Dom should have been on at HT and that Gary should have replaced Gaffney who was doing nothing. I Know Denis wasnt playing too well but taking him off and then starting to launch the ball into the box makes little sense ended up putting Paddy up front with Dom to try get on the end of crosses when Behan would have been better to have there.

The only sub I had a problem with was Gaffney not coming off for the simple reason I thought it could have been a straight swap with Gaffney and let Gary run at their full back. As you say the ball was just being pumped in at that stage so having Behan off didn't help even though he had been poor anyway.
