I think his boat has sailed, and I can't see him ever managing at a high level again, but here's hoping he improves dramatically. Some of the Irish club managers out there seem to give more of a chance to Irish players, and if he manages to rise to a position where he's giving Irish players a better standard of football to play, I'd be happy.
All the best Stan. Not his fault he was thrown in at the deep end. Anyone of us would have taken the job having had no experience.
Hopefully working alongside Daglish in an environment he's comfortable in will help him progress. Would like to see him do well and he has a fair way to go.

I find it very sad that his short tenure as Ireland manager and how badly it ended , still gives some people a reason to take the p*ss out of the guy.
His spell as Ireland manager was in no uncertain terms a disaster ....but a disaster imo that was aided by some of the clowns in the FAI that hid away in the boardroom after Sir Bobby got very ill into his tenure as Stans supervisor and had to step away from his role.
With Sir Bobby's illness happening so quickly, in reality the FAI should have shown some cojones and got in a replacement to help stan out.
If im honest , i dont think Stan has the makings to ever be a good manager but under the right guidance he may well prove to be a useful coach.
With Steve Clarke at anfield , I have no doubt Stan will learn alot and I really hope it works out for him

If Staunton showed even an ounce of contrition for the awful job he did as manager of Ireland, then I'd say he doesn't deserve the ****-taking. The man dragged us into an abyss we are now only starting to climb out of. He was absolutely atrocious yet clung on till the bitter end to make sure he got his extremely undeserved payoff imo. If someone like Kevin Keegan can walk away from a job because he feels he wasn't up to it then Staunton who made the former look like Jose Mourinho certainly doesn't deserve my respect. Great player certainly but he had long since spent any goodwill I had for him when he was still going on about his 4 year plan after that last minute draw at home to Cyprus when we'd been played off the park for 90 minutes and only scrapped the point with a goal at the death from Finnan.Quote:

You're right Charlie, we did get a bit unlucky against the bigger teams in the group. Had Germany already qualified by the time of that 0-0 game though? Can't remember. You're also right that he brought through a lot of younger players, including the 3 above, but I remember thinking at the time how difficult it must have been for them to come in, play in a clueless, directionless team and get bood off, which was happening a lot at the time especially towards the end. I'm just glad that it didn't appear to knock their confidence too much but they were dark days. Youngirish is right. We're only really starting to undo the damage he did nowQuote:
