Did McAteer then tell him to write it in his book?
Some people were saying it was set up and they were only messing.
I find that a bit hard to believe.
Find it hard to believe someone managed to catch the photo. Cluxton looks like a darker haired Ivan Drago too.
Some of the recent threads here are making me paranoid!
If genuine, it seems like the reaction is "our local GAA hero showed that soccer nancy boy".
If it had been one of our soccer stars doing the same at a charity match it'd have been "those soccer thugs are a disgrace. No wonder nobody likes the sport".
Exactly, gah are great hard men arent they - until the Aussies come to town

Bizarre reaction lads.
Calm down.
The only one doing the soccer v gah thing is Bernard Dunne!
Actually its so obviously a fake - doh!
It's a punch, not a full blooded punch but a punch nonetheless.
What did Jason do, to wind up Cluxton?
Said 'here this'll look great in the papers'?
Apparently it's all genuine. Cluxton responded to a tackle from behind by McAteer.
The guy who took the pictures has posted here:

Some nice tweets from Dunne there
"it wad a whopper."
"Be was ay it all game"
"Didn't know Cluxton nor McAteer where that good acting"
But my personal favourite is when he lays into the US sports for no reason
"Unlike our western neighbours sport GAA boys dont mess about..."
Forgot about Ricey's heinous knee in the neck. Only was some Orchard knacker though. Does that make it right? Probably.
Eh, the outcry in Australia about some of the crap that they're players were getting away with was unreal. Hence the games since have calmed down. They were taking men out with high tackles and off the ball tackles which you can get suspended in AFL games for but not in International Rules at the time so it ended up being a free-for-all. Suspensions were brought in and the Scum (Nick Riewoldt) element has abated somewhat.
Have to say it was a very elegant punching action.
Isn't McAteer from a big boxing family? The retaliation would have been interesting.
Jason's finest punch was landed on Neuman's face at Lansdowne rd 2001. He does his best contact work when both feet are off the ground.
Apparently the incident that precipitated this was McAteer ankle-tapping Cluxton.
Now this was a charity game and if the eyewitness reports are accurate, McAteer had been niggling a few lads.
Nobody is wearing shin-guards so it's obvious they were told to take it easy.
Cluxton has a League final coming up and then it's straight into the championship.
If I was him and someone ankle-tapped me in a charity game I would have been pretty annoyed.
Not saying I would have hit someone but I'd be pretty annoyed.
ive a mate who played on the same team as mcateer and aldridge. Ill ask him to see what teh story is!
Not a proper GAA monaghan manly punch. Thats what geysir means :D
go on what did he say. Its a charity game, he shouldn't have been niggling, but cluxton shouldn't have done that either.
Bernard Dunne is the one who looks the worst after it all has settled
Geography is not Bernards strong point.
or brogans, saying the western...
To be honest unless mcateers head has gone back some distance, it doesn't actually look like he connects with him or at least he didn't connect with him properly. He certain doesn't seem to have put his body into the punch(where the real power comes from), and just hits him with a strike.
Giving McAteer a box is one thing, but I wouldn't stick around after giving Aldridge a box.
exactly Paul,
like this knockout punch that the gentle petite Dessie Mone connected with on Man Mountain Donaghy.

stutts or even tets wouldn't like you promoting/condoning that sort of behaviour geysir.
I don't know about Tets but Stutts would want to know what part of the anatomy was hit, in order for that giant to be calling for the xxx large stretcher.
Cluxton is a tool, a failure footballer in fact. Didnt make the grade.
Also lucky to be still Dublins No1.
Macca is a bit dim but a very pleasant lad, always obliging, willing to do autographs etc. Cant remember the lad ever getting into too many spats with the exception of the kung fu incident. Maybe thats what he should have returned to Cluxton.
Cluxton has been one of the best goalkeepers in the GAA for a good few years. He might not have made it at soccer but we are talking professional/amateur here.
Macateer may be pleasant and all that but if he was acting the ****** he shouldnt be moaning if he got what was coming to him.
I believe it. I saw McAteer play for the Liverpool Legends back in March of 2009 at Turner's Cross. He ran the show and took it very seriously, the rest of the lads were just out for a stroll and he was putting in tackles left and right.
To be honest, the Australians were quite proud of their lads, and despite some people complaining, winning was more important to them than the methods employed. The general perception was that we were a pack of whingers.
What galled me most was their lack of appreciation of the amateur status of GAA players. I work at a school which has produced more AFL players than most over the years. The sheer god like status given to these kids is sick and the Aussie Media's upbeat coverage of sport makes the English Media look placid!
