a lot of non-dublin based fans feel that the ref's in the league show bias in favour of the dublin teams when they meet.
me, i just think the standard of refing in the league is really, really bad.
In a month or so you be able to compare the standard against referees from the likes of the Seychelles and New Zeland (x 2)
silly arguement really , do you think a ref who may be a rovers fan
is going to be bias to bohs while they are playing galway , not a chance
standard is just poor all round bar 1 or 2
Fans of every single club think that every single ref is out to get them. Culchies just blame it on them being from Dublin.
Don't forget the Referee's chief is from Cork ;)
Its those Dublin refs begorrah, sure us culchies can't even read.
I've a busy day of sheep that need to be sh**ged, I've no time to be reading bookface.
Seriously - I don't think that facebook is a good barometer of what people really think. People tend to agree with whatever someone says just for the hell of it.
Tom from Donegal - "I hate dublin refs"
Ned from Cork and 139 other culchies "like" this.
Where as here people just thank posts instead. far more civilised.
Referees no matter where they come from do favour certain clubs in the league,
this has always been the case. Its like they almost feel obliged.
Its not a Dublin thing either, if Derry are playing say for instance Monaghan the referee will lean towards Derry everytime.
I don't really think it's a case of Ref's being biased towards the Dublin clubs, i think its a case of the refs being biased towards the bigger clubs. But this just does not happen in Ireland, This happens all around the world in football.
The bigger ot the 2 clubs tends to get more decisions go their way, especially if they are playing at home (United at Old Trafford, Liverpool at Anfield, Real at the Bearnabu, Barca at the Camp Nou, the list goes on and on..)
It certianly doesn't help that the standard of ref's in our league is generally quite poor, but personally i think the Ref's "Assistant's" are even worse. 9 times out of 10 they are at least 5/10 yards behind play but still make a decision when they physically can't.
I seem to rememberAlan Kelly signalling a "wide" when Bohs player Paul Devlin had scored ...em in the centre of the goal v Bray 5 years ago. Worst refereeing decision ever....against the biggest club!
Rovers scored a legit goal against Dundalk in Oriel a good few years ago which went into the goal and through the side netting only to be signalled a wide....so I suppose your theory does ring true from time to time.
A Sligo ref having a preference for Sligo Rovers - understandable. A Galway ref having a preference for Galway United - understandable. A Dublin ref having a preference for St Patrick's Athletic/Bohemians/Rovers etc......a tad ridiculous. The idea that Dubs have some sort of predisposed loyalty to all things Dublin is well wide of the mark. If Sligo get to a cup final, people jump on the bandwagon. If Bohs do, there is none. It's much harder for Dublin clubs without a defined geographical connection to the greater area to attract new fans. Besides, it's insulting to the referees to suggest that there is any bias present.
All I know is that when Shamrock Rovers and Bohs come to United Park, they tend to get the decisions their way.
That is all.
Well maybe it's a certain fan that is biased (as ALL fans are) and not the refs.
Dublin refs are clueless, went to a Derry game recently v mervue and the ref ( not from Dublin ) was the best ive seen in 25 yrs of LOI football. Didnt even know he was on the pitch, even gave a deserved pen to mervue every decision he got right and let the game flow. 4 days later went to LC v Galway and the ref from dublin was awful over weight blew whistle for fun and was no enjoyment him breaking up the play
Indisputable evidence there! Eidur Gudjohnsen is better then Titus Bramble so does that mean that people from Iceland are better at football than people from Ipswich? French people are rude, Muslims are terrorists and Dublin people can't ref.....it's time to end these unfair stereotypes!
and Rob Rogers is an awful referee :D:D
When refereeing standards are so consistently poor and people grapple for the reasons it's understandable that conspiracy theories will abound.
When the majority of refs and the majority of premier clubs are from Dublin, its an easy theory for supporters of non-Dublin clubs to arrive at - especially when decisions go against their team. Inevitably most fans get outraged about unfair decisions
against their team, but are very sanguine about dodgy calls in their favour.
There is no doubt in my mind that the likes of Bohs have received more dubious calls in their favour then most. But then a team that has the lions share of possession or has the ball more often in the oppenents box will get the benefit of more calls from the ref.
There may be other factors - like the "Sean Connor" factor, where refs go out on the pitch with a pre-conceived notion of the attitude of one team, and is eager to show he is the "top dog".
There may be many reasons for the high card count and bad decisions, but I doubt if geogrpahy is one of them.
Shocking decision alright, not half as bad though as the one when Avery John punched Jason Byrne (i think) in the cup semis about 10 years ago in front of the ref.
I'm sure if stats were compiled bigger clubs would come out well on top of getting more decisions go there way than not.
I think you'll find in most immature countries of our size and makeup that there will be a serious "them and us" divide, especially when it comes to sports. In the good old GAA those whose relations are a tad too closely related figure that the dirtiest team in Ireland are the Dubs (this I had a hilarious monologue on a Luas to Tallaght one night with from an Armagh ex-pat), and only last week I had an Athlone fan telling me that this year Delaney went all out to get rid of country clubs because he loves Dublin. Refs in the league are as poor as any other league, they can only do so much and please only some of the people, but Dublin-based refs being against country teams - sure isn't there over 4 million of them against the 1million left around the city - so we need a bit of love!
Alan Kelly refereed an FAI Cup match between Cork and Galway a few seasons back
Have briefly scanned through the thread but i dont think any bias exists among refs its jus that theyre all terrible, really terrible referees. They are that bad that i reckon even if they were trying to show a bias to a certain team that they would still upset that teams fans!!Seriously though, i dont know how many times i come away from Rovers matches thinking jesus that referee was terrible for us and then thinking well actually if i supported the other team i would think he was bad too!!Surely that has to be a bad sign......
I dont no if it becuase we are top of the league but i have found the referees alot better this season than in the last few season
Oh and everything from Dublin is better than anything from the country including our refs, Deal with it
4th officials wreck my head!
Someone has come up with a coping mechanism
