So here we are six months or so after the amalgamation of Newtown and Park and im just wondering, Do people think soccer is now stronger in the town or are we still struggling?
what amalgamation  newtown disbanded .. ok a lot of players joined park but a lot also stayed in clare league... from what i have seen this year still struggling for all shannon teams none of them seem to have improved or got stronger this year..:ball::ball:
I think it must have gotten stronger.
Park youths today for example. Two players left Shannon to play with Wembley.
One of them transfered back only a few weeks ago as he said it was no better.
This Wembley youths team have been the best team in town for quite a while now and i'm not sure if you were the but Park gave Wembley a bit of a hammering today. Finished 3 nil and could well have been more.
To me it seems like its rapidly improving at all levels. From under 8s to junior.
Definite improvement. The Park youths team is the best youths team around for years and a perfect blend of the 2 clubs players...which was the purpose in the first place.8 wins on the trot from the first plus b team well up there also.Olympic doing great and the other Shannon team Bunratty also doing well.
( Sorry I couldnt help it..it just slipped out)
both clubs b teams playing in division 4a would be equivelent of division 7 in clare so not a great improvement..
shannon town a & park a both missed out on promotions last year . and around this time of year both were doing well also don't think either team has improved greatly this year ..:ball: hopefully all the shannon teams can do well this year as soccer in shannon badly needs a bit of success :ball:
apologies my mistake ... pushing for promotion into one of the strongest junior leagues in ireland .. still only pushing long way to go yet but hopefully ye can do it and also all the other clubs in shannon can do as well... any team that wins league / get's promoted fair play to them but the hardest bit is then staying in new division on a permanent basis :ball:
I think its too early to judge the park/newtown amalgamation yet Shannonman. AFAIK it was setup to improve the schoolboys and eventually have a junior team made up of "homegrown" players good enough to compete for premier titles, cups, Fai, Mjc etc... and continue to bring youths through to the junior without having to approach other clubs players. At the moment i dont think any club can boast this. I do however think all the local Junior A teams seem to have improved this year. Ye are having a great season and will hopefully get promoted at least, Park have improved massively lately and could yet sneak promotion, Olympic are going well and could also get promoted, Bunratty have a chance of winning the clare premier and rinneanna have been very strong in cup competitions. All in all its good for the area to have so many teams doing well :ball:
that is the problem too many of the good shannon players spread out with different teams. while there are so many clubs in shannon , shannon will never have a chance of winning an fai or mjc.
the youths will move on if they are going to go play in 1b or even 1a with the town....
i think as pike b said aslo the best shannon could offer would be in the premier in town. Might even push for a title with the right management /set up (last time park had the pick of the town they won the lawson and got to the fai 1/4, players lost interest and setup fell apart and they were nearly relegated the following year).
The players that would not make this team/squad would be in 1a if you ask me and maybe the 3rd team not far behind that.
At the moment you have some good players with each team all fighting for the same thing, promotion ..... surely a united team would achive this...
who would be the best you could call on from the shannon teams or players that have left and playing locally. That is the only way to judge it. you would however need somebody who only has shannon football in mind to take on a job like that and not somebody who is aligned to one club or the other..
I would have to disagree Pike B,i think if the best of shannon were to join forces they would more than hold their own in the limerick premier and would have a great chance of winning it. Problem being, as goals4fun said, there is some very good players playing with just good/average teams in and around shannon instead of having one or 2 very good teams full of very good players.
so to get a united team ex shannon .. what do you call it / who manages it... do you also disband park afc / shannon olympic / shannon town can't see this ever happening to many people involved with clubs & to much petty politics .. if it did happen
i think team would get into preimer league no bother .. as you would also attract players from neighbouring parishs to strenghten squad,
would love to see it happening but can honestly say i don't think it will ever be possible :ball:
Well you have Shannon Town and Park in the limerick league and only Shannon Olympic in the Clare league so it would make sense to stay in the Limerick League, now i know Rineanna and Bunratty play in Clare but they aren't technically in Shannon. And, without wanting to start the debate again. i think its assumed that the Limerick league is stronger.
what anbody involved in football in shannon should want, is to have the best team with the best local plays, playing to the highest they can (be it clare or limerick leagues).
To think that a few mindless muppets is keeping this apart is crazy. for the last number of years all clubs have struggled financially as they were all selling lotto tickets on each others door step, all trying to have great grounds (again at a cost), all struggling for managers (decent ones anyway) for the underage set up.
If the people who do not want this to happen get their way the clubs struggle and struggle. Shannon is too small for 3 clubs to be run successfully.
Park have a great youths, i suspect that this is the only youths team in shannon or has the best players. What will these players do when the finish youths, move on, just like paddy purcell, brendy hughes, damien o'rourke, davy wall (eventually)....says it all really
Have a look at what wolfe tones can achieve, that could be a dream for shannon football, but while everbody sits around doing nothing, throwing mud at each other it will just be a sad dream....
mindless muppets over the top ( i'm supposed to be the grumpy old git :D)
lot of excellent work over the years to build up their clubs at shannon town / park / newtown /olympic.. also players will still move on no matter how good your club is.. park youth team next year how many will want to stay at club as b team players or subs or even subs for a team !! as for wolfe tones different situation club formed as part of a new town / parish were only 1 sport was allowed ( so no real competition) with alot of support & help from local business / community but fair dues to them for continuing to progress with their excellent facilites .. but soccer clubs finally now seem to be getting their act together re-facilities with probaly less support & help wolfe tones received .. 1 club ex shannon started with shannon town in 1969 and over 30 years later we have park afc / newtown ( now gone) shannon olympic and even de beers .. so getting back to one team ex shannon is unfortunatly only a sad dream :ball:
Out of the Park youths team this year that are youths and not 16's or 17's I can think of 8 players that would be in with a chance in this years "A" Team. Theres four of them playing this Sunday for the A team and they all probably have a good chance of starting. I know its a massive step as the quality of football is probably worse and they have to get used to the "aul fellas" kicking them but if we do go up this year I can't see many of them leaving.
while i agree with some of your posts, imagine what 1 club could achieve. it is only a few people stopping this. It would be worth asking all the players in Shannon would they like one club and to play at the highest level? if they didn't they may as well be doen at the tones training facility playing 5 a side..
To pin your hopes on a youths team as being the future of Park AFC is not very smart. Youths will move on , to other clubs , to other sports ,to life without football , its the way it works.
Park AFC are trying to get somewhere, to be admired but it is a pity that it , from the outside , was to the detremint of a club like Newtown. Shannon competing in the Premier in Limerick as a united team , made up of all the Shannon clubs and as some have mentioned , Rineanna and Bunratty players is in my mind a pipe dream.
As long as I have been around Shannon there have been cliques , I can't ever see these disappearing . Who will hold the reigns , what clubs will fold ?
Though it would be great to have a Shannon team made up of the best players in the locality challenging for FAI and MJC , I can't see a single football entity existing , too many differences. Better still it would be great to see a team doing this while in the Clare League.
I wonder how a Newmarket , Rineanna and Bunratty amalgamation would go down ........nah can't see it happening either.....
As First said their are too many cliques to have one team in Shannon?
Shannon town were the first club in the town if it was possible why did they all split and go their seperate ways?
If the amalgamation(mass extermination of Shannon Football) was to become reality then we should head back up to Shannon Town and apologise for ever leaving. I can almost gaurantee that 50% of all the players in Shannon have played with them at some stage anyhow.
Second of all why did you call all the people who didn't agree to the amalgamation "Muppets"?
I call them visionaries. If they all amalgamated then history would repeat itself they are only only sparing themselves the hassle of going through it again.
When there was only one team in this town what did they win?
I'm not old enough to remember?
I just think a bit or rivilary is great, ive been with Shannon Town 20 years and for the first time i feel the club is going foreward and progressing...right from the bottom, a lot of work has gone into getting us back to respectable and i dont think it would benefit us to amalgamate with anyone, i think IF we get promoted we will draw some of the best players around....thats just my opinion and i know its not shared.
Quick question as a non Shannon person.
Who is the best Shannon born player playing at the moment?
Ger Kelly
Davey wall
Obviously pa purcell but he isnt playing in shannon
i canot believe that there are small minded people here who would not want 1 team in shannon, is that so some of the lesser players can still play 'top' football or that all the players hate each other, or is it the big wigs behind the scene keeping what they can of memories......
