Dublin Grounds

Hi, i'm a footballfan from The Netherlands and I like to see grounds in the whole of Europe. I have a site dedicated to grounds. Don't know if i'm allowed to post it here, but you can check my profile. It's all in Dutch so quite hard to read, I guess. Now I got a question; I planned a holiday in Dublin from 4th of July till the 9th and want to see the grounds in Dublin. My question is; is it possible to go into that grounds or are they locked? Another question; are there still old grounds which are not in use in Dublin?

Sorry for my crap English, but I don't write in English regulary. Hope you understand my questions.

There is a game in Belfield on 4th July against Longford. The ground is in the bottom right hand side of this map, between Fosters Avenue and the Stillorgan Road.

Next season UCD are moving to the Rugby Ground, also on the map, at the top, to the left of where it says Greenfield Park.

You'll have to pay into the game against Longford but you can just walk over to see the rugby ground without any difficulty.

I was thinking about that game. Not sure how late we're arriving in Dublin. I'm also thinking about Bohemians v Derry City (7 July) and Bray v U.C.D. (9 July). I saw Shelbourne was playing against Odense. Which date is that? The 8th? Heard that impossible to get into the ground of St. Pats on a non-matchday. Is that true? And is Lansdowne Road still excisting or are they busy with the works at that ground?

Lansdown Road is still here. If you get the train to Bray you pass under the west stand and you can get a good view of the ground.

Make sure to go to Dalymount though, it was the national football stadium before the international team moved to Lansdown Road and it has some of the cheapest Guinness in Dublin. The Bar there is open every evening except match days and you can go into the stadium from there. You can see Dalymount on this map and you can walk there (about a mile) from the city centre. You can also get the number 10 bus from Belfield.

You can also walk to Croke Park from the city and it's Irelands biggest Stadium (82,000 people). Football games will be held there when Lansdown Road is closed.

Check this website ... if you go to grounds you'll see a few of the grounds in Dublin. Whitehall also has a ground and Santry .... you'll have to get some directions to them. Tallaght is also not in action yet as its still being built. The RDS was used as a league ground for many years. John Hyland park, you'll have to get directions to that aswell though.

Tolka Park (Shelbourne FC's ground) is open Monday to Friday during the day. You can just walk in and look around. No one will stop you from having a good poke around. The office will be open most of the time (Thats under the most modern stand) and someone in there should be willing to chat to you about the ground

Joris, the ground is not open on non match days but the club office will be glad to let you in for photos etc. Directions and contact details on the club website www.stpatsfc.com and there's a club shop for you to spend your hard earned tourist money too :)

Don't bother wiht John Hyland Park its miles from anywhere (I Live near it) and really not worth the effort as its a glorified training pitch

joris shels v odense is on sunday the 9th july at 3.00. tolka park is handy enough to get to as it has several bus routes and is not too far from the city centre

Of the 3 league games you've mentioned above, Bohs v Derry will be by-far the best game (i.e. highest standard of football), and the ground will be the best as well. Dalymount is leaps ahead of either Belfield or Bray's ground.

Plus you can sit-in the Derry end and experience what are widely considered to be the best fans in the league..... :D

So, as the TV ad would say - if you only chose one Eircom league game this season, choose that one.....

Being a Derry fan, 'he would say that, wouldn't he?' - but he's right. That's the best game to go to, in the best ground with the best fans in the country.

On old grounds, Pats used to play in Harold's Cross greyhound track and St James's Gate used to play in the Iveagh Grounds in Crumlin. They're about 30 minutes' walk from each other. There's not much to see in either but if you're really committed...

Bohemians v Derry was my first choice. Two teams who are well known. Derry played in The Netherlands a few year ago against Vitesse. There was a lot of difference in heights in the level of the pitch.

Croke Park is another stadium I want to visit. I think it's only possible to go in with a groundtour. I heard Ireland are going to play in that stadium. From which date that is? That big terrace (Hill 16 it is, I think) had something to do with the Easter Rising in 1916, but what was the exact story behind it?

From a friend I heard there was a very old ground near the Guiness Brewery (he was there 10 years ago), I that still excisting?

What is the exact place where that old Shamrock Rovers ground was standing? And is there some plaque reminding of the old ground or are there only houses on that place?

The RDS and the John Hyland Park are they old grounds from still excisting clubs? And do they have stands or only a pitch?

It's where Glenmalure Square is marked here. There's a small monument outside the estate on Milltown Road, complete with the remains of some Bohemians graffiti. :rolleyes:

Harold's Cross has a small stand, see here. The Iveagh Grounds is just a pitch. Actually, I'm not even sure if it's the same pitch that James' Gate played on in the league.

The nearest ground to Guinness is St. Pats - see Dodge's post above for a link to the club website. That one IS 30 minutes walk (or less).
