City Hunting for 3 new players : Evening Echo 6th April 2002
by Mark Woods Evening Echo
Cork City are speaking to three experienced players with a view to signing them for the new season which starts in July.
Club owner Brian Lennox confirmed this to the Echo today and also added that manager Liam Murphy is on the hunt for players in the US.
"He's due back from Boston in 10 days and we'll then go across to England to look at some more," Lennox said.
City don't intend a huge clear out of players, but the new owner stressed the importance of strengthening the squad from last season.
"If the new players blend with the youngsters I can't see a reason why we can't be in with a shout for honours," he added.
Lennox would only say some of them had eircom League experience.
"Everybody knows we need a forward and a central midfield player but those are not the only two areas we're looking at improving. The position regarding Ollie Cahill's future remains unclear. The ball is in Ollie's court and it's up to him to come back to us."
Lennox is busy building the right structures for the era of summer soccer in Ireland.
"Cork City FC must become professional off the pitch first. It would be illogical to conduct our business any other way. We will have a new office and club phone line at Turners Cross which we are renting from the Munster Football Association,
"We must also look for land to develop our own training facilities. Until such time as the infra-structure is right we won't be in a position to go with a professional squad."
