Just wondering what's the general view on pubs for games. Many have tvs in the worst possible positions. They offer atmosphere but no view! I don't get many having an obsession with other tv stations from across the water either. We'll criticise RTE but I'd still prefer to be watching their coverage.
There is no better channel than RTÉ to watch a tournament.
There are some great pubs to watch the games in Dublin but that may be a bit of a trek for ya.
I have a bee in my bonnet about this - don't go to Doheny & Nesbitts. Pictures of Ireland's great sporting heroes adorn the walls: rugger players, GAA legends, racehorses, golfers, the works. Not a single footballer. No Giles, Brady or McGrath. It really bugs me. Same as the new arrivals walkways in Terminal 2 in Dublin airport. Sportsmen and women of all codes, actors, politicians, playwrights etc. Any footballers? Not one. The queen's visit...? We're not all in this together. We're in this amongst ourselves so go watch it amongst ourselves.

Nesbitts is a crap bar anyway.
Only place to watch a match is from a barstool I've been told.
D&N is a massive rugby pub, and always has been so I'm not surprised. I worked in a bank many, many moons ago and it was a favourite haunt of the senior management.Quote:

Meh, I'm getting a brand new TV this week, nice sofa a couple of metres from the TV itself. Nice fridge is only a reach away from the sofa. I don't see why I'd want to go anywhere else to watch it.
My two favourite bars in Dublin to watch matches are The Lotts snug and MacTurcaills.
There's two seats in each of those that are incredible spots once you get in on time.
Pubs are supermarkets of sin.
If you are looking for sin they are the place to go.
Seriously though I prefer to watch the Irish matchs at home. I do a better class of suffering at home,
its very much an individual thing. I usually watch on tv or laptop at home (depending) with a couple of friends, some wings and beer...
That said, planning on a trip to the local Irish pub for the Irish games. The first will be me in my irish jersey and my 7 or 8 checkers-clad, picnic-blanket looking Croatian in-laws... no matter what, its going to be drunken afternoon fun for 90 minutes (and hopefully longer) :)
I find it impossible to watch a match properly in a pub. You can see the action but I find I tend to miss out on the small details that allows one analyse a game as much as is possible to do it watching on a telly. That said, the atmosphere should be great and I think a lot of pubs will let you reserve a table, so it'd be worth getting on that and sorting something out so you've a guaranteed decent view. It'll be a long, enjoyable day with Italy Spain beforehand, looking forward to it. As to which pub, probably somewhere out in leafy south Dublin.Don't think I could handle the crowds in the pubs in town.

Dont mind watching games in pubs but only games that I just interested in as opposed to passionate about.
Hence why Ireland games, I watch at home, literally on the edge of my seat for the 90+ mins.

The last time I watched an Ireland game in the pub was the 2nd leg playoff against France. I have never returned....

Watched that in the college bar in Athlone I.T. Also the last Ireland match I watched in a pub. Absolutely amazing until that unfortunate incident. Great banter with about 50 French folks in the bar too.Quote:
