Premiership clubs have been asked to clarify transfers involving joint ownership of players after concerns arose over various deals.
The Premier League yesterday blocked Everton’s attempts to sign Manuel Fernandes permanently because of a Portuguese investment fund’s 50 per cent share in the midfield player, while Javier Mascherano’s proposed move to Liverpool is also complicated by the fact that he is not owned entirely by West Ham United.
All 20 top-flight clubs were contacted yesterday by the league, which is bound to have reservations about the increasing practice of players being part-owned by other parties. Fernandes, the Benfica midfield player who has been on loan at Portsmouth this season, has moved to Everton on loan for the rest of the 2006-07 campaign. “The problem is the ownership with the player [Fernandes]. His registration would not purely rest with Everton,” a Premier League spokesman said.
