"Roy Keane, immediately terminated discussion on the Vacant Irish managers position in what WAS, prior to this explosive revelation, a low-key Press conference earlier today, leading to speculation in some quarters that he may be being lined up in a shock swoop by the increasingly desperate FAI.....Sources close to the Wearside club could neither confirm nor deny the structure of the plan, but the Drumaville consortium are said to be .... There. I've just added 2000 copies to the Oirish Sun's circulation.
Dunphy's interview from the RTE News At One earlier: http://media.putfile.com/Eamon-Dunph...TE-News-At-One
I'd say it's more to do with the fact the interview will be conducted by or instigated by the three boys, who any confident, sought-after manager wouldn't have much respect for in terms of their Irish football knowledge.
I mean, it's not like people don't see them as some badly cobbled together farce of a panel, and think they are the three greatest brains in the Irish game.
what would the interview be like?
"where do you see yourself in five years time Roy/Gerard/Didier/etc"
Thanks Noely for the RTE news info. Dunphy may as well have said he would appoint Jock Stein instead, wtf is the point of saying 'I'd appoint Jewell'
I am only getting the hang of Betfair. It looks to me that Tigana has come in there but there is not a lot of money being laid on him.
How about?
How well do you know the players?
How would you have them play?
what is your philosophy on football?
how would you deal with the teams in our group?
Can we qualify or would you rebuild for next EC/WC?
where do you think our strengths & weaknesses lie.
how would you rebuild confidence.
etc. etc.
I think the interview process is invaluable. It can identify a manager and his readiness and enthusiasm to start/do the job.
I think saying :
"Hey Mr *insert manager with decent history of bringing sucess to middling teams here*, Are you ready to do this job, and are you enthusiastic about it? Cos you're top of our list on the basis of your world famous achievements, and If you ready & enthusiastic, we have a considerable amount of money to give you. "
would have been equally sucessful. (And unless the statement was read out by someone with extreme learning difficulties, it wouldnt take three damn months to do, either... )
Seriously, If you ran a managerless computer company, and had even the slightest suspicion that Bill Gates was interested in running it, would you call him for interview, (along with the guy who has experience stealing computers, a guy who has extensive knowledge of the 1983 Apple II 5&3/4 inch floppy drive model, and the guy who failed maths & science in his junior cert) or would you headhunt him, & lock you & him & your best business minds and persuasive employees in a room so you and he could negotiate the best possible arrangement?
 yourself.
What I was getting at was a prospective manager would probably think the 'interview' by three randoms who aren't exactly the be all and end all of irish football knowledge would be conducted as if they had just read a 'how to do an interview' manual before the candidate showed up.
The managers believe they should be trusted and picked and not have to explain themselves to people with lower positions and achievements in football than themselves.
I am in favour of interview if there are a number of 'alright' candidates and no standout. If there is a standout he should be approached and got, like Roy was on about.
but hey that ain't the situation we have here is it.
1. We don't have the money to headhunt the best candidate. the best candidates are making stacks of dough in club management.
2. We have a list of mediocre managers who have expresssed an interest none of whom is a stand out candidate. How do you determine which one to hire. The least you can do is to talk to the viable ones and then chose.
he's entitled to an opinion as anyone. he was asked a question and he answered it honestly and what he said had zero scandal. some people will just latch onto anything to knock our greatest ever player. i wonder if someone like paul mcgrath had said what roy said would it even get a mention on this thread?
ah go way out of that. some people seem to think that any criticism aimed at Keane is an attempt to "knock our greatest ever player".
The thing is that Keane is the only one that has gone out of his way to knock and undermine the process as much as he can and this is the exact reason that the media keep on asking him about it. the rags are guaranteed a big headline along the lines of "Keane slams the FAI selection process" as soon as they ask him the question.
No matter if we agree with Keane (and to a point I do!), I just don't understand why he keeps commenting on it as it has absolutely nothing to do with him!! I agree that he's entitled to his opinion but he should realise that anything he says (as previously pointed out by others) will be spinned to high-heavens by the media. He's been critical of the process on several occasions now, we all know where he stands on it so he should just mind his own business (i.e Sunderland) at this stage...
when did Houllier express an interest?
Look the time to judge the success of this process is after the new manager has been installed and we've actually played a few games.
Also the idea that some of the potential candidates would being interview by fellow football people is ridiculous. Most of them have had to deal with idiotic chairman. I think it would be a change for them to talk with people who actually have playing, coaching and mgmt experience.
The time taken to appoint so far isn't a problem. There's no rush. I remember people saying we should wait until after the Euro Championships when some of the managers may be available. I think that's way too late.
