Has anybody been watching southland? It's a 'Shield lite' cop show but I'm starting to warm to it.
what are peoples views on the Wire? Ive heard mostly good things about it in general.
just watched the 1st episode, 1st series last night and it werent half bad.
If you liked the first one then you're off to a good start.
It's a bit of a slow burner, and for most people seems to be a case of of bearing with it for the first x episodes. It's all about building the plot and characters, can spend half a season doing this before anything happens.
But it's a great show.
About to start the sopranos, which I've never seen, myself.
What mouse said. The Wire is a regular contender at the top of "Best TV shows ever" lists.
actually i like cartoons so i cant recommend a show.
It's feckin brilliant. Half way through season 3 now, as we're watching 2 or 3 a night most nights! I want to complete it before giving a final verdict, but certainly so far it's on the verge of knocking the Soprano's off the top of my list. So many brilliant characters, and does the thing that HBO seems to do better than most of no absolute good or bad guys - sometimes you like a character, sometimes you think they're absolute c**ts.
A N Mouse - The Soprano's is brilliant too. Not as slow a start as the wire, anyway.
The Wire and The Sopranos are the two best TV shows of all time. No question at all IMO. Don’t be a fan boy and pick one to the detriment of the other. Just enjoy hour after hour of incredible storytelling, impeccable acting, nail biting drama and more comedy than in 99% of sitcoms.
The pair of them have redefined TV and surpassed cinema as the medium of innovative film makers.
Realise I sound like a blowhard but seriously, buy the DVDs and see if I’m wrong
watched both series, and i will deffinately be rewatching both at some point in the future,
personally though i thought The West Wing was better than both shows, deffinatly must watch TV
Just finished the 1st season of The Wire, oh yes its class
The rate we're going, we won't be long finishing The Wire. Any recommendations for what I should acquire next? A few in work rave about Mad Men, but it seems a bit of a glorified Soap Opera from what I've seen? I revist to Oswald State Correctional Facility is on my list, but I doubt it'll be the missus' thing...
breaking bad is also pretty good, working my way through it at the moment, and im always being told to watch dexter and mad men,
if you like comedy id recomend all of these,
the big bang theory,
californication,
that 70s show,
malcolm in the middle,
chuck,
house,
rules of engagement,
scrubs (only seasons 1-8)
if your lookin for more serious
the west wing
band of brothers,

Mad Men is exceptionally good. Extremely clever use of history as a backdrop too. Dom Draper is the best antihero since Tony Soprano.
It’s the only thing I make a point of watching at the moment.
Have a love/hate thing with Breaking Bad. At times I got into it but I can’t stick with it.
(Oh and Arrested Development is my favourite sitcom of all time)
just to add my approval on Dexter - got through all 4 (?) seasons a few months ago. Superb show.
And Arrested Development is my favourite sitcom of all time also. Just ahead of Peep Show and Spaced.
Good stuff, a few to try. Just for info, i've watched the soprano's and west wing (both twice at this stage!). We'll probably go Mad Men first I suspect, but then I didn't have the missus down for really enjoying The Wire.
Much as we're loving The Wire (into season 4 now), it really shows how crap the TV options are that not once has something that's actually on stopped us throwing on the DVD!
In fairness the Wire (and others) are better off being watched in DVD form (so you can do a few at a time, no ads etc).
There are a few passable TV programmes that are fine for filling an hour or so (Chuck, Bones, Hustle) and add in the odd film, documentary and sport and we’re OK tv wise. Really top class stuff is only ever going to be once/twice a decade
There's a few programmes that we watch, but wouldn't bother getting on DVD/ Download in the normal course of events - House, NCIS, CSI, CSI:NY, Spooks to name a few. But nothing on at all in the 9-10 slot that we would bother with. But I guess you're right though, an unfair comparison given what we're currently comparing it too.
btw Finished Our Friends in the North at the weekend. Good series, and must see for people who don't understand why corruption matters, and why the Tories (and their fellow travellers on the right such as the PDs) are tossers.

Well worth a watch are GBH, Dockers, Ghosts, North Square, Never Never, Teachers, and Traffik (the original)
Brilliant British drama
Season 4 finished - probably between that and Season 2 for my favourite so far. It's that feckin good I might start it again when I finish!
Season 4 of the Wire is a masterpiece.
True Blood and Mad Men or perhaps Spartacus. Pillars of the earth also a good watch.
If the tv show of Pillars of the Earth is as good as the book its a must see
oh and watched the pilot for this last night.

very funny. one for the arrested development fans as has david cross and will arnett.
david cross is a loser who gets sent to england to work.......and makes increasingly poor decisions!!!
Just watched the first episode of Boardwalk Empire, thought it was excellent
Finished The Wire last night. Definitely one of the top 3 ever. Season 2 or Season 4 my favourites.
I'll be looking a Broadwalk Empire.
I stumbled across episode 1 of the excellent "Boys from the Blackstuff" last night. BBC4 are repeating it on Sunday nights.
